O. I'h lis. Will Present a Communication Embodying This Request to Finance Committee To-day. GIVES FACTS AND FIGURES In view of the recent flurry In the tax offiee, due to the disappearance of a former; collector, considerable interest attaches to the following letter from Receiver of Taxes Honey asking for two additional clerks In the Delinquent Tax Bureau, which request will be presented to Councils finance committee today. His communication reads: Jannary 15.

To the Presidc-ut and Members. of Finance Committee of Councils: Gentlemen In nstdng for two clerks ns supervising auditors in the Delinquent Trix Hurenil nf i rlennrtment I hail in view added safety and Increased collections, lu appointments of deputy collectors of delinquent taxes care has ahv.i.vs been exercised in the selection of men whose honesty and integrity have been beyond suspicion, but I am of the opinion that the appointment of two clerks as susested would act as a check to any temptation to nnnnclitl weakness on the part of any delinquent collectors and at the same time urge greater collections. Very many of the receipts turned over by the deputy collectors are from rents collected from tenants, and a part of the purpose of the addition of the two clerks would be to keep the several deputy collectors continuously at work In their respective districts. On the report that a former collector had disappeared from the city, deputy collectors from other districts were at once detailed to go over the work of that collector, making a personal and thorough canvass. This necessarily took them from the work in their own districts and in which collections had to be neglected.

Wants Salaries Fixed at S1.500. Inasmuch as the supervising auditors would be required during the year to work In every ward in the city, to its extreme boundaries, the expense of car fare and other transportation tat times needing the pervices of horse and carriage) would be an item of considerable expenditure, and to cover the extraordinary expenses which would be thus entailed on the two men the salaries (including allowances for such expenses) should be not less than $1,500 each. The collections ol the delinquent bureau during the live years of my Incumbency of the otlice of Receiver of Taxes have been as follows: 195 ism: 18IIS lSUt) l.LVi:.45.7M 1.47S.770 02 1.4KUUtl.tt4 1.71".(K4.34 Total Anil as yet not one dollar lias been lost to either olty or The collections at the (lepnrtment of the Receiver of Taxes dtiritiR the same period tiiiclwling Its bureaus) have been as follows: iw IMM ISflS yi.iilO.lMK-t.1 liltit i 21.i;:s.40o.4-( i Total $110,007,019.61 Office Shows a Jiflt.
