A small room behind the mall security office will provide privacy for one-on-one tutoring, although Olson said not all tutoring sessions will have to be in that location. "I can even see that if the tutoring is ongoing, they can meet and have coffee somewhere," Olson said. "There really are a lot of nooks and crannies and spaces for this to happen in the mall.

"For many people, the mall is a comfortable place," Olson said. "For someone living in the darkness of illiteracy, libraries are intimidating places." Traditionally, libraries are where many tutoring sessions take place. Since its inception, the Literacy Network, made up of community volunteers, has searched for a way to reach people who cannot read or want to read better. Many people coping with illiteracy treat it as a shameful secret even hiding it from close family members. Complicating the problem is that most literacy efforts require people to know how to read to some extent to find out about the help available.

Olson said a hotline with a yet-to-be-chosen, easy-to-remember phone number will enable people to call for help. Public service announcements will make the number widely known. And the central location of the mall will not draw attention to people seeking reading help. Many people can combine literacy with a shopping trip, Olson said. "The original and main focus is to reach out through the hotline and identity people who cannot read at a functional level and provide them with help.

That most likely will be adults and adult tutors," Olson said. "But the bigger picture includes all kinds of issues. "It may include English as a Second Language candidates. It may include people with certain specific reading problems. We can answer questions about how to help your studentchild.

Also, we will encourage the book stores to take an active part promoting the newest, the latest and whatever the current-issues books they have. I think we will be resource for everybody. And 1 expect to get calls from people saying, 'How can I Olson said. Every call will be logged. Literacy Network volunteers will follow up with callbacks to make sure people's questions have been answered and needs have been met.

By Erin Andersen Journal Staff Writer After a two-year search, the Rapid City Literacy Network will have a home base and a hotline. And it will be in Rapid City one of the city's most-HMraBn traveled locations Rushmore Mall.

"This is so remarkable," said Judy Olson of the Literacy Network. "We needed a place that was nonthreatening and safe. This is it." Bernie Hunhoff says sluggish tourism numbers for South Dakota are a red flag that state Rapid City leaders must pay HMamnnaB more attention to the fledgling travel industry. Campaigning in Rapid City Friday, he outlined a five-point tourism plan. "Our challenge is the same as that Ted and Dorothy Hustead faced in the 1930s when they saved Wall Drug how to slow down all the people who are zooming by us so they'll stop and take an interest in South Dakota," said the Democratic gubernatorial candidate. Hunhoff, 46, founder and publisher of South Dakota Magazine, said he cure passage of an enhanced tourism-promotion fund. But Hunhoff said the state still advertises less than competing states.

Hunhoff said his five-part plan would try to keep tourists who visit Mount Rushmore or Crazy Horse Memorial in the state long enough to discover the real South Dakota. He said his plan would: Assist communities that want to develop their tourism potential with serious self-assessment of unique 1928 1998 SEVfcNlY YfcARS OF BmW EXCELLENCE Istoric Hotel Landmark Restatirit press for Missouri River management that will maximize fish and wildlife production and recreation. Hunhoff also said the steady tourism growth of the 1980s and early 1990s has stagnated.

An inflation-adjusted University of South Dakota study shows a 2 percent drop in tourism revenue in the past two years. As the state's second largest industry, tourism is a $514 million industry, which contributes $1.2 billion to the state's economy, Hunhoff said.
