"Libraries are still experimenting to see what works, and it varies enormously from community to community," Millsap said. "A lot of libraries have tried them. Not all have been successful." For some, it might be as simple as a coffeepot near the entrance or a coffee cart, she said.

Others, including Millsap's library, went fancier adding a full-service restaurant especially as libraries are renovated or expanded. A restaurateur rents the space, she said, allowing the library to stick to what it knows the book business. In Ulysses, library staff operate the shop. It's not for profit, Roberts said, but it does pay for itself A coffee bar was added when the library at Hutchinson Community College was renovated, also privately run. Others are waiting At the Hutchinson Public Library, officials have discussed adding a coffee shop in the basement, although that is as far as the talk has gone, said director Leroy Gattin.

A survey at the Wichita Public Library found more patrons there wanted bookstore- type amenities, including cates and coffee shops, said Esther Headley of Research Partnership, the marketing group that conducted the survey Roberts said she has received calls from several other libraries around the state interested in adding coffee to their settings. State Librarian Christie Pearson Brandau visited the Ulysses library last fall with Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, calling it a literary "oasis" in southwest Kansas. "It is something people really connect to," Brandau said, "going into the libraries, seeing books, being in the atmosphere and a having a cup of coffee." Symphony Original work also featured on Sunday FROiW PAGE D1 "This is a program of great music that originated as another source, as stories," Hakoda said.

The symphony also will ture an original composition, "Mandan Impressions," by Walter Mays. Mays, a distinguished professor of music at Wichita State University, is an acclaimed composer who has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Mays' composition is based on an authentic Native American song of the Mandan tribe recorded in 1912 by American Indian ethnologist Francis Densmore. Originally written for a single solo recorder, Mays has reworked if for full orchestra. The composer plans to at- tend the Salina concert, Hakoda said.

"It's a different kind of music than we're used to hearing here, but it's something I've always wanted to do," Hakoda said. "Bringing different kinds of music to Salina is very important to me." be reached at 785-822-1405, or by e-mail at Reporter Gary Demuth can journal.com.
