Douglas. August JNF HONOREES It was announced that 1 1 Wisconsinites will be honored at September's Jewish National Fund annual dinner. The honorees are Bruce and Nancy Chudacoff of Appleton, Ann and Julius Garber of Fox Point, Clara Lebow of Glendale, Ruth and Sheldon Resnick of Fox Point, Bernard and Lorraine Rob-bins of Milwaukee, and Gertrude and Rabbi Louis Swichkow of Milwaukee. CONVALESCENT CENTER EXPANDS A new wing of the Milwaukee Jewish Convalescent Center was dedicated. The addition provides 13 private rooms and several public rooms.

JUDGE BORK OPPOSED The Milwaukee Section of the National Council of Jewish Women called on its 850 members to urge Wisconsin senators to vote against the appointment of Judge Robert Bork to the US Supreme Court. GOVERNOR ADDRESSES FEDERATION Governor Tommy G. Thompson spoke at the annual meeting of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. He called the Federation a role model for other Wisconsin groups. At the meeting, Todd Lappin was named the Federation's president.

CAMPAIGN GOAL APPROVED The Milwaukee Jewish Federation approved a 1988 campaign goal of $9.2 million. The Federation will have raised $8.6 million in 1987 if and when the pledges are collected. KARL CAMPUS DEDICATED Ceremonies were held to dedicate the Max and Anita Karl Jewish Community Campus, which will house seven HADASSAH RESTRUCTURES The Milwaukee Chapter of Hadassah was restructured, creating three new small groups the Career Women's Group, the Young West Side Women's Group, and the BaysideRiver HillsMequon Group. KOHL HONORED Milwaukee Bucks owner Herb Kohl received the David Ben-Gurion Centennial Award at the Wisconsin State of Israel Bonds annual dinner. Larry Gellman was honored as the New Leadership Honoree.

At the dinner, presidential candidate Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) said that Israel enhanced the security of the us. MAYOR LAUDED Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier announced he would not seek reelection. Milwaukee Jewish leaders praised the seven-term mayor for his contributions to the community. MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL MERGER Milwaukee's Mount Sinai Medical Center announced plans to merge with Good Samaritan Medical Center for budgetary reasons.

Mount Sinai president Sarah Dean said Mount Sinai is the first Jewish hospital in the US to merge voluntarily with a non-Jewish hospital. TORAH DEDICATION Members of Milwaukee's Congregation Anshai Lebowitz carried their new Torah scroll in a celebration parade down Burleigh St. The Torah was dedicated in memory of Lillian Heffernan by her sister, Eileen Perlson. JCC FINANCIAL SURPLUS Milwaukee's Jewish Community Center, which had financial woes in previous years, announced it had a surplus of $50,000 last year. POPE CRITICIZED The co-chairs of the Catholic-Jewish Conference of Wisconsin criticized Pope John Paul II for meeting Austrian President Kurt Waldheim, who is accused of complicity in German army atrocities during World WarH.

INTERNATIONAL LEADER Alan Marcuvitz of Milwaukee became the second Milwaukeean elected to the Jewish Agency's Board of Governors, joining Martin F. Stein. There are only 22 Americans on the Board. 1 rr'- fit! CAMEL RIDING At Milwaukee's May 3 Israel Independence Day celebration, children rode Eleazer the camel. Hundreds of people attended the festivities at the downtown Jewish Community Center.

SUMMER EVENINGS OF MUSIC SEASON CONCLUDES The annual Summer Evenings of Jewish Music, under the leadership of Lorraine Cohen, ended its ninth season with a tribute to klezmer music JEWISH JUBILEE CELEBRATION Between 2,000 and 3,000 people attended the seventh annual Jewish Jubilee in Milwaukee the last one held at the downtown Jewish Community Center. Next year, the ethnic festival will be held at the Karl Jewish Community Campus.

31,425 STATE JEWS There are 31,425 Jews in Wisconsin, according to the "1987 American Jewish Year Book." In 1930, Wisconsin had 29,750 Jews. According to the 1986 survey, the Milwaukee metropolitan area has 23,900 Jews and Madison has 4,500. NEW RABBI IN TOWN Rabbi Joseph Ozarowski was appointed the first rabbi of Milwaukee's Lake Park Synagogue The 34-year-old Orthodox rabbi becomes the Milwaukee area's 14th spiritual leader. GOLF CHAMPION Skip Kendall, 22, of Fox Point became the first Jew to win the state amateur men's stroke play golf tourney. Kendall became a professional in August.

-v K- V- 11 Ill 1 CONTROVERSIAL RABBI Kenosha rabbi Dena Feingold told the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis on May 19 that she performed an intermarriage. As a result, the Council voted to change its policy on rabbis who performed intermarriages serving on the Council. After the vote, seven rabbis resigned. SUBSTANCE ABUSE LECTURE Dr. Abraham Twerski, a specialist in the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse, visited his native city of Milwaukee and asserted that substance abuse occurs among Jews at all levela RABBIS RESIGN Seven rabbis resigned from the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis after Kenosha rabbi Dena Feingold announced she performed an intermarriage POTOK LECTURE Novelist Chaim Potok lectured an audience at Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue on the place of secular literature in Jewish traditional values.

Singer Paul Simon announced that he would make a substantial financial donation to Project Reunite, a program created by Milwaukee Jews to reestablish homeless families COHEN DIES Milwaukee native Wilbur Cohen, a major architect of the Social Security system and a Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under President Lyndon Johnson, died. He was 73. June RABBIS REUNITED Most of the rabbis who resigned from the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis last month rejoined after a compromise was reached that, among other things, revoked Rabbi Dena Feingold's voting privileges. GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION Friends and relatives from all over the country packed the downtown Jewish Community Center of Milwaukee to honor Rabbi David Shapiro and his wife Etta on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. September STATE JEWISH LEGISLATORS TO ADVANCE? In the aftermath of US Sen. William Proxmire's announcement that he will retire, State Sen. Russell Feingold expressed interest in running for the Senate and State Sen. Mordecai Lee said he was interested in the House of Representativea Both are Democrats. MJC OPPOSES BORK The Milwaukee Jewish Council voted overwhelmingly to oppose the nomination of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court.

Council vice president Tom Schneider said decades of advances would be reversed if Bork's positions were approved by the Supreme Court. JEWISH FUND GIVES GRANTS The Kibbutz Langdon Foundation of Madison, now in its second year, announced the availability of funds to give to Jewish organizations. The foundation focuses its grants in Madison and the Midwest. WISCONSIN HONORS WORLD WAR II SPY Anti Nazi fighter Mildred Fish Har-nack, a Milwaukeean who graduated the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was honored by the Wisconsin Legislature on Sept. 16.

The Nazis executed Har-nack in 1943. JOINING TV NETWORK The Milwaukee Jewish Federation is one of 23 North American Jewish communities that have made commitments to participate in a satellite network that was unveiled this month. The network will transmit live programming to Jewish organizations from all over the world. (Please see page 8) resident Morris Silber, 81, was honored for his winning entry "Heartbeat of the Community" in a state-wide contest to find a theme for Homes and Services for the Aging Week. ZIONIST CONGRESS ELECTIONS Milwaukeeans Esther Leah Ritz and Jerry Benjamin were elected delegates to the World Zionist Congress on the Friends of Labor slate The big winners in the election were the Movement to Reaffirm Conservative Judaism (MERCAZ) and the Association of Reform Zionism (ARZA).

NEW SYNAGOGUE Chabad of North Shore dedicated its new building in Mequon. The congregation announced it plans to move into the building during the High Holiday season.
