To the r.lan with COUNTY COURTHOUSE i DESTROYED BY FIRE (Continuea Iron page one poured on the blaze and it was reported under control at six o'clock, although Smethport and Kane firemen had hose lines in operation up until noon. Efficient work of the firemen and the fact there were fire, doors to block off the flames were given credit for saving the two wings, which house offices of the county comissioners, county auditors, county treasurer, recorder of deeds and judge. 'xhe fire started in the. east portion of the first or basement, floor. On that side of the floor are located Smethport's polling place, including two voting machines which were destroyed, a storage rcom, emergency lighting system and utility room.

The west portion of that floor includes offices of the McKean County Farm bureau, a storage rcom, boiler room, and an air conditioning unit. Only part not damaged by fire was that hous.ng the air conditioning unit, which was badly damaged by water. As a result ali the vitally important records of the prothonotary amassed over the year were safe jii the basement of the west wing.

With amazing speed the flames shot through the walls to the third floor, in which were located the courtroom, scene of many trials famous in the county's history, the district attorney's office, the ecu ty detective' office and quariers of the county probation officer. The grand jury rcom and the jury room the fourth ficor also were destroyed as the flames roared through the cupola. A slight breeze fanned the conflagration and it was apparent from the time it was discovered that the old building was doomed. As a result firemen aimed their hose line at strategic points to check the blaze1 where it might communicate to the new wings. Other firemen guarded against flying embers starting blazes in the area.

The popular belief that swimming is easier in deep water is incorrect, though perhaps the mental effect has some influence. A person swimming in shallow water knows that on the least, fatigue he may stop swimming and stand on the bottom; in deep Water he knows he cannot do this, but must exert himself to swim well and under these circumstances it may seem 'easier to him.
