However his maternal grandfather, who was known as "the world's tallest rabbi," was 7-foot-5. Brought to this country at the age of 2, Mr. Carmel attended William Howard Taft High School in the Bronx.

He later dropped out of City College of New York because, he said, "I went there to have a good time." Employment was never a problem for softspoken, ent, deep-voiced giant. He appeared in several horror movies and commercials and, for many years, performed with the in gling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus whenever it made its annual visit to New York. The circus billed him as "the World's Tallest Giant." He was also in demand for promotional events. For a time, he had a rock 'n' roll group called "Frankenstein and the Brain Surgeons." A highlight of the group's nightclub routine was Mr. Carmel's spontaneous composition of wry poems based on suggestions from the audience.

Children were both the joy and anguish of his existence. In a 1965 interview with The Record at a sale sponsored by a Paterson toy store, he said that the great satisfaction of his work came from the delighted expressions on the faces of children. Yet 1 he later attributed his semi-secluded life to the often severe taunts of neighborhood youngsters in Co-Op City, the Bronx, where he lived with his parents. "Sometimes they called me other things than giant," he said. "They know all the words, these kids do." Burial was to be today in Beth-El Cemetery, Paramus, following private services.

An extra-large gravesite was excavated, Mrs. Edith Webb, spokesman for the cemetery, said yesterday. An oversized oak casket with reinforced sides, was built, said Sherman Marks, head of Sherman Marks Funeral Directors, New York City. He eight men twice the usual number would carry the gentle giant to his final resting place. 4070 PRINT Ranaut UP1 Photo Eddie Carmel, actor and entertainer, in 1961 photo.
