The Weil-ton Daily Times The Acknowledged Leader in Hancock County in News, Advertising and Circulation WEIRTON, WEST VIRGINIA SATURDAY, DECEMBER 26,1970 PAGE? Strip Mining Attacked By New Senator CHARLESTON, W. Va. (UPI) --Senator-elect Si Galperin has pledged no letup in his campaign promise to wipe out the "devastation and destruction" brought on by strip mining. Oafperin, elected to the state senate as a Kanawha County Democrat, however, fears a soft stand by the state's two leading political figures might ruin any chances of strong legislation to erase surface mining. He referred to Gov.

Arch A. Moore a Republican, and Secretary of State John D. Rockefeller, a Democrat, and said both might shy from a firm stand on the issue. Any big push for stiff legislation against the industry could set off a backlash in future politcal campaigns, Galperin pointed out. "I think when any important public figure takes a position, it does influence people, and it would, to a certain extent, make it more difficult to actually eliminate strip mining if they take a moderate stand," he added.

Sam Perlman, president of the Delaware Valley group, explained the project last November at a Chicago meeting. Next year, it will be submitted to the National Federation of Temple of Brotherhoods as a project for its 70,000 members. "First we wanted to make sure it would work here," Rosenfeld said. "You say, what does it mean to do something Jewish," he said. Perlman answered by quoting from the Jewish prayerbook: "Open your eyes to the nobility of life and its sacred opportunity of service."
