A compilation by selective service headquarters showed today that of 107 cases appealed to the chief executive, 63 were decided in favor of men who had refused to accept decisions of local appeals boards.

Slices of wood so thin that they can be bent into nearly any desirable shape and yet with a tensile strength sufficient to support the entire weight of a heavy man will be used in the construction of the new plas tic planes developed by the Morrow Aircraft Co. of San Bernardino as the result of a new technique developed by engineers of the plant. The wood is high grade spruce, sliced by a unique process to degrees of thinness ranging from one-quarter of an inch to three-thirty-seconds of an inch. That to be used in the Morrow plant was personally selected by the company's materials and adhesive technique expert, E. A.

Horn, who two months ago in the company of W. R. Angell Morrow company executive, flew to the great north-west lumber region and spent weeks in selecting just the proper grade of spruce for use in the process. Only about 5 per cent of the spruce normally cut for building is suitable for use in the lamination process developed by Mr. Horn.

The wood, in order to withstand the slicing process without loss of its strength, must be clear stock cut from a tree which has had only enough water and sunlight to allow it to grow very slowly. Consequently, Mr. Horn and Mr. Angell first had to determine the location of stands of spruce which would meet this requirement, and then choose from logs cut from those stands only the finest pieces. Nearly a box-car load of logs was chosen in this manner and then shipped east to one of the compara tively few mills in the country equipped to slice full-length logs. After nearly 30 days required for slicing and curing, the lumber arrived in San Bernardino ready for use yesterday.

The wood will be combined with resin glue and laminated to the desired thickness and used in the construction of planes wherever curves and angles are necessary.
