Slovakia, at Providence, R.I. Canada vs. Russia, at Calgary, 6:30 p.m (TSN) Monday Game Canada vs. Slovakia, at Edmonton The Canadian Press ATLANTA 'Jacques Martin of Sherbrooke, defended his title in men's discus Thursday to highlight a six-medal day for Canada at the Paralympic Games. Canada now stands at 46 medals 17 gold, 11 silver and 18 bronze and appears on pace to attain the objective of 75 medals when the Games conclude Sunday night.

Two gold were also won in cycling with Julie Cournoyer of Sherbrooke, and Alexandre Cloutier of Quebec City taking the mixed 65-kilometre tandem road race and Gary Longhi of Montreal winning the five-kilometre open road race. In track and field, Martin, at his fourth Paralympics, won the discus for wheelchair athletes with a 33.24-metre toss, his best throw this season. But it hadn't been looking good for the 35-year-old world record holder entering Thursday morning's competition. "My confidence was down all week, I was having trouble throwing 29 metres in practice," said Martin, a silver medallist in javelin on Monday. "But I thought hard about everything (Wednesday night) and had a good sleep.

He has a 27-inch waist and a 300-yard drive. He is1 a household name: Hidemichi Tana-ka. Hidemichi Tanaka? "Tanaka?" Paul Goydos asked.

"Isn't he the Japanese CIA guy in one of those James Bond movies?" ''Actually, he is one of three co-leaders in the NEC World Series of Golf. Tanaka, Goydos and Billy Mayfair each shot 4-under-par 66 Thursday in the first round at Firestone Country Club. -'Steve Strieker is next at 68, and Justin Leonard and Mark Brooks, who each shot 69, were the only other golfers under par. For Mayfair, 30, this could be the start of righting one of his most frustrating wrongs. He led the World Series last year by three strokes with four holes to play.

Then he fell apart, losing to Greg Norman in a playoff. "After that, I was waking up a lot of times at night, thinking about it," May-fair said. "I kept thinking 'How did I lose This time, he finished the final four holes with three birdies. For Goydos, 32, this could be the end of a slump. At least, he hopes it's just a slump.

Goydos has spent his career on golf's bubble, not quite good enough to stay on the PGA Tour, but too good to stay away He won the Bay Hill Invitational in March for his first career victory, but has missed the cut in nine out of 15 tournaments since then. "I fell into a funk there for four months," he said. "That's not a big surprise. My career has not been something to write a book about yet." He did finish in ninth place at the Sprint International last week in Denver, though, and made two 20-foot birdie putts on the back nine yesterday to tie for the lead. But the story of the day was Tanaka, back right away." Martin has won at least one gold at every Paralympic Games he's entered since 1984 and plans to compete at the 2000 Games in Sydney Wheelchair racer Chantal Petitclerc of Montreal won her fourth medal, a silver in the 1,500.

The 26-year-old television host has two gold and two silver and is making up for a subpar fifth place in the 800 Olympic demonstration race. "I'm just showing myself I can do it," said Petitclerc, after her 200 victory Wednesday night. "It doesn't heal all the Olympic wounds, but it helps a lot." Silver medals also went to two visually impaired athletes: France Gagne of Quebec City in the javelin and lawn bowler Vivian Berkeley of Kitchener, in women's singles. The story: Japan's Hidemichi Tanaka shares the first-round lead of NEC World Series of Golf. Notable: The five-foot-six, 130-pound Tanaka amazes spectators by driving the ball 300 MivMuiA.

the household name. For households in Japan, that is. "No, no," Mayfair said. "I think he's played some on the tour, but I don't know him." In Japan, though, Tanaka is a teen idol. At 25, he is constantly on the cover of Japanese magazines, and even has his own clothing line with an ant in armor on the left chest.

"An ant is small, but powerful," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I am very small, but powerful." Before Tanaka's round started, fans watched him on the practice tee, shaking their heads at the loud "THWACK" his driver made when meeting the ball, then amazed at how far such a small man could hit it. How does he do it? Tanaka answered by demonstrating his swing, with a slow backswing, a baseball follow-through and a big laugh. He was the rookie of the year on the Japanese tour last season, but acknowledged that he isn't good enough yet to be a regular on the American tour. This is just his third tournament in the United States.

Asked if he knows any English words, he said he did: "McDonald's." Actually, he did know a few more, such as "I was nervous" and a few unprintable ones he used later on the practice putting green. During his round, though, he sank a 45-foot birdie putt on No. 3. He made birdies at Nos. 11 and 12, too, and would have had the lead to himself but for a missed three-foot putt on the final hole.

"I was nervous," he said, then he broke back into Japanese. The interpreter said: "My name was on the top of the board. That is why I was so nervous."
