OOLDEiJ GLOVEG V) a Green learned on mean streets By THOMAS HANRAHAN FINAL TICKETS NOW ON SALE! "I used to be one of two guys who would take on any other two guys from any other gang," said Green, a toothpick dangling between his lips and a slightly sleepy look on his face. "That was safer than having the whole gang rumble," he added. "And it taught me a lot about how to survive in a serious fight." Which may make the ring a tame arena in comparison. Because of all the fighters in the 54th Golden Gloves, Green is the most composed, the least ruffled when the time comes to mix it up legally. For a big man he moves with the grace of a lightweight Do not confuse his punches with that size of boxer, however.

Because when Green hits people, rapid-fire bursts that illustrate the veracity of his street name, there are few people who can remain on their feet. He will meet Merling Castellano, a 19-year old construction worker from the Bronx, Friday, March 14th, at 7:30 p.m. in Madison Square Garden. Green is the heavy favorite, not only because of his background on the street, but because he is also the defending Inter-City champ and has posted a respectable international record of 5-1. He is also recently returned from Tennessee, where he sparred with WBA world heavyweight champ John Tate, and Washington D.C., where he trained with Dave Jacobs, Sugar Ray Leonard's trainer.

"I want to go pro right after the Gloves," said Green. "I had wanted very much to go to the Olympics, you know, give those Russians a bit of New York. But now I'll just see if I can make a living at it" Tickets that will enable you to see Green in person are still available at the Madison Square Garden ticket office, but act now because the finals are traditionally sold out. It's first-come, first-served for $8, $6 and $5 seats at the Championship Finals of the 54th annual Golden Gloves Tournament. Friday, March 14 is the.

date! It's America's largest and most exciting amateur boxing tournament! Tickets are available now at Madison Square Garden ticket office 9 a.m. to 1 0 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 1 1 a.m.

to 8 p.m. Sundays and at Ticketron; tickets not on sale at The News. His mother named. him Mitchell Green but if you're from uptown you probably know him as "Blood." "That came from all the street fighting I used to do when I was young and dumb," he explained yesterday. "I'd always make something bleed when I hit someone a nose, a lip, something." There was a need for that in the neighborhoods Green grew up in.

He started out in the Bronx, on 175th St. between Anthony and Clay Aves. Then there was a stop in Harlem. 142nd St and Lenox another leisure zone in Fun City. And the Bronxdale projects in Soundview, near Rosedale and Watson Aves.

"Oh, they were all bad places," recalled Green, who lives today in Jamaica, Queens. "Especially uptown, where I was a member of 'The Black We had hundreds and hundreds of members, and it was the basis of the 'Black Warriors' gang that was featured in the movie The Warriors." Green was always at the front when the gang decided to play. At 6-5 and 210 pounds, he was an obvious target "I was shot twice when I was 17," said Green, who is 23 today and going for his fourth Golden Gloves heavyweight championship. "But it had to have been the will of God that I wasn't hurt" The first time Green was shot it was with a 22 magnum. The bullet passed through his right wrist not a good place for a boxer to be wounded.

But the slug missed arteries, bones and nerves and Green was fighting again a short few weeks later. The second time he sustained a graze wound, when a slug slashed the right side of his head and went on its way, sparing Green but leaving a short, puffy scar. Ironically, it was the gunfights that led Green to a less lethal but still dangerous mode of gang conflict Sponsored by DAILY NEWS Charities. Inc.
