A preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 6 for Lester E. Wayman, 26, who gave police his mother's address in Fallon, during booking at the Weber County Jail. According to court documents, Wayman's fingerprints match those on the bloody neck of a broken beer bottle found by the body of Richard Ely Harper, 42, on July 14.

Wayman allegedly told police he killed Harper in self- defense after Harper attacked him with a knife, according to a probable cause affidavit A knife as not found at the mur- der scene in a transient camp. The affidavit listed slash wounds from the beer bottle to the chest as contributing to Harper's death although the pri-mary cause was strangulation. Two Ogden detectives traveled to Fallon last week to pick up Wayman, who was being held in the Churchill County Jail. 67th Transportation Squadron and Combat Logistics Support Squadron, rescued the deteriorating P-38 from the uninhabited island in 1994 and shipped it to Ka! Aero near San Diego for restoration. To reconstruct the plane, Kal Aero had to manufacture some parts and see if other components were still around, gathering dust warehouses, old hangars or salvage yards.

"There's a whole culture out there, an old airplane subculture which every body helps. If they don't have what you want, they often know where it is," Reynolds said. Museum volunteers and Kal Aero bought or traded for a "fabulous instrument panel," Reynolds said, a seat and canopy, pair of rebuilt V-12 engines found in Fairbanks, Alaska, two propellers discovered in a California orchard and three wings unearthed in a salvage operation. Once the P-38 was rebuilt, five men from the 67th and a sixth Support Squadron drove to San Diego, took the Lightning apart, packed it onto trucks and drove it back to northern Utah. Marc Reynolds and his colleagues have nearly finished piecing together a P-38 Lightning airplane one of the legendary fighter planes of World War II for the Hill Aerospace Museum. They hope to finish the work this weekend, once the nose section arrives. "These artifacts are in jeopardy of disappearing forever. They're history, and it's important to capture the history before it's gone," said Reynolds, chairman of the Air Force Heritage rjoundation's board. The restored, twin-engine P-38 will go on display soon in the Hill museum, but the official dedication will be in October.

That will give the foundation time to invite World War II fliers arid historians to the ceremony. By the time Reynolds became an Air Force pilot in the 1950s, jets had replaced the propeller-driven legends of World War II the P-38 Lightning, the P-40 Tomahawk, the P-47 Thunderbolt and the P-5 1 Mustang. The P-38 was just one of many fighters built by the United ing in age from 4 to 12 listened to music while the local anesthetic was taking effect and again while stitches were being applied. Another group heard no tunes. During the procedure, youngsters were asked to rate their pain by pointing to faces on an "ouch-er" scale, originally developed by Judith Beyer in 1983 while she was a nurse at the University of Colorado.

The scale shows children in escalating states of distress, from somber to shrieking; Kids also were asked to rate their anxiety on a numerical scale. Kunkel found no difference between how much pain and anxiety the two groups reported. However, parents of the children who listened to music were "overwhelmingly satisfied" with the mixture of medicine and music and were sure their kids were distracted by it. "Children aren't easily fooled. They really don't think the music helps," Kunkel said, 'it seems like it really helps the parents more than the kids." Demand for protection orders leads court to seek more judges VWiJ K5dklf IHjUjJlJ earned a special status as the plane flown by Maj.

Dick Bong, America's ace of aces. Bong shot down 40 Japanese fighters, the most by a U.S. pilot in any war, and earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. "These artifacts are in jeopardy of disappearing forever. They're history, and it's important to, capture the history before it's gene" Marc Reynolds, chairman, Air Force Heritage Foundation's board The Hill Aerospace Museum's P-38 Lightning came from Alaska, where it crash-landed on Buldir Island in the Aleutian chain in 1945.

The foundation, with help from the Air Force Reserve's Officials offer several reasons for the continuing increase. Police, prosecutors and the news media have made Utahns more aware of the orders and the process has been simplified. The orders were conceived to safeguard abused spouses, but are being sought in a variety of circumstances. Third District Court Commissioner T. Patrick Casey has seen roommates squabbling over a stereo, parents intimidated by adult children and gay couples who have no other legal forum for separating.

Married couples occasionally used the orders as a quick and list varying Ten of those listings vary by 100 feet or more, hile 16 include less than a 10-foot discrepancy. For example, the highway map lists Salt Lake County's Mount Olympus at 10,500 feet above sea level. The U.S. Geological Survey lists it at almost 1.500 feet shorter, at only 9.026 feet above sea level. George Wilkins.

Civil filings statewide have dipped for the second year in a row, but the demand for the protection orders continues to increase.

The 6.832 issued in fiscal 1996 amounted to a 37 percent increase from 1995. The 19 Legislature rejected the courts' request for 12 new clerks to help abuse victims get the orders. But to meet the crushing caseload, internal funds were shifted to hire 1 1 of the clerks. State maps SALT LAKE CITY (AP) More than a third of the mountain peaks listed on the state's "Official Highway Map" differ from federal government surveys, a newspaper found. In all, the measurements of 31 of the 97 peaks listed on the statewide map vary from U.S.

Geological Survey figures, according to the Descret News. On the highway map's smaller Wasatch Front map, differences were found among 13 of the 19 peaks. That puts 44 of a total 1 1 6 peak elevations listed, or 43 percent, into question. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Piping music into the emergency room at a children's hospital didn't do much for the youngsters, but their parents felt better. Nanette Kunkel, an emergency-room doctor at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, found that music does not lessen the pain and anxiety of youthful patients being treated for skin lacerations.

Kunkel knew that adult cancer patients reported they were calmer and felt less pain when listening to music while undergoing chemotherapy. So, in an effort to help young patients feel more comfortable, Kunkel decided to try music on children who were getting stitches. After asking two dozen kids what kind of music they liked, she compiled a collection of tapes that included songs by Michael Jackson. Boyz II Men, Raffi, Garth Brooks, Whitney Houston and from "The Sound of Music" and Disney soundtracks. Occasionally, the orders are sought on falsified grounds, Casey said. "We do our best to sort through the facts," Casey said. "It's often one person's word against the other. I wish I had the time to really hear all of the evidence." The initial orders are valid for about three weeks, and they then can be challenged at a hearing.

And once he makes a determination, he said he would make a recommendation to the Utah Department of Transportation's (UDOT) information department. UDOT contracts printings of 1.5 million copies of each version of the state highway map, in three1 batches of 500,000. Gary Nebeker, office chief for the U.S. Geological Survey Earth Science Information Center in West Valley City, said he too has noticed problems with the state highway map.
