Following their Utah Symphony ap- I iy of music presents I I oeV eV jT SSdJJ I BIRTHDAY PARTIES By ERIC FIELDING Herald Guest Film Reviewer Horror films have been with us practically since the invention of motion pictures at the turn of the century. One of the first of the genre was a 1908 version of "Frankenstein" made by Thomas Edison. Over the decades there have been a few really successful horror films classics such as "Dracula," "Dr. Jekyll and Mr.

Hyde," "Psycho," and most recently, "Poltergiest" but the vast majority have been second or third-rate movies at best. This sub-category might best be called Gastly Gore or Horrible Horror. That is the category that two new films "The Entity" and "One Dark Night" would fall into. "The Entity" is one of those films like "The Amity ville Horror" or worse yet, its sequel, "Amity ville II: The Possession," that purport to be based on fact. This is the "true" story of Carla Moran (Barbara Hershey) who is terrorized and repeatedly raped by an invisi "TV It also hannens that recently interred in this same mausoleum is an evil master of the occult who decides to come back to life that same night.

You can tell this is a rather low-budget (and quality) film when the "big name star" is Adam "Batman" West. "One Dark Night" might have been created to reflect what teenagers told the producers scares them the most. But that, unfortunately, has little relationship to the quality of the final film. As a horror film, "One Dark Night" only succeeds in tying together a series of disgusting cheap shocks instead of terror. Many of the shocks and the special effects of both "The Entity" and "One Dark Night" were done and done much more successfully in Stephen Spielberg's production of "Poltergeist" last year.

Rather than wasting time or money on either of these films, I suggest renting a videocassette of "Poltergeist" and having a frighten-ingly good time instead. GRADES: "The Entity," "One Dark Night," ble being. Even if you can buy the premise of "The Entity," this film suffers from second-rate acting, dialogue and production values. Hershey's performance could best be described as hysterical (as in emotional although a lot of the film ends up being unintentionally humorous). And the audience ends up feeling seasick since most of the film is "artfully" photographed with distorted and skewed angles.

This film earns its R-rating from language, nudity, and its violent sexual situations. Despite its purportedly true premise, "The Entity" seems much more concerned with "exploitation" that it is with "explanation." "One Dark Night" has everything: lightning, nightmares, a graveyard, psychic vampirism and the living dead. Everything, that is, except an interesting story, artistic unity or believable dialogue. This PG-rated film is the story of a high school girl who is locked in a mausoleum as a cruel initiation rite into a girl's group imaginatively called WG PROVIDE: Admission Balloons Diih of let Cream Party Room Place Mats Skate Rental Soft Drinks Coloring Books Announce Name and Play Birthday Song Classic's Brithday Gift A Skating and Waterslide Pass Ma CLASSIC DON JUAN, WHOM NO WOMAN ON EARTH CAN RESIST, YET THE FIRES OF HELL MUST CONTAIN.
