daughter Patricia and John Freeth of Nepean, grandson Jim of Nepean and granddaughter Janet of Vancouver. Walter, a great patron of the arts, was and will continue to be an inspiration to those who knew and loved him, not only because of his extraordinary accomplishments, but due to his compassion, integrity and his respect for the creative spirit. Walter Herbert enjoyed a fascinating and rewarding working life that spanned more than 50 years. After graduating with a law degree from the University of Alberta in 1926, Walter's career began in legal department of the Alberta Wheat Pool in Calgary, from where he moved on to become Director of Public Relations for the Canadian Wheat Pool in Winnipeg. This experience led him into business for himself as a consultant and then to a similar post as Director of Public Relations for the National Liberal Federation in Ottawa.

After war service as Assistant Director of Public Information for Canada, Walter set up a privately financed information program for airmen from abroad who were in Canada with the Commonwealth Air Training Scheme. In 1945 he established the Canada Foundation which continued into peacetime a similar service for Canadians and also provided funding in the then much-neglected field of the arts. In the years that followed, Walter served as Director of the Canada Foundation; was active with the Canadian Association of Adult Education; the Canadian Citizenship Council, the Film Awards and the Canadian Public Relations Society; was a member of the Senate of, and later professor of law at Carleton University and a member of the Canadian National Commission for UNESCO; and was a contributor of many articles on public affairs, educational and cultural matters to magazines and encyclopedias. Walter was awarded the Canada Council Medal in 1965, the same year he became a Doctor of Law at the University of Alberta. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (F.R.S.A.) and was appointed to the Order of Canada as a recipient of Medal of Service in 1968 and as an Officer (O.C.) in 1972.

Walter was also a recipient of the d'Honneur" of the Canadian Arts Council, and the National and President's Medal of the Canadian Public Relations Society. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Walter's friends at ACCESS and the C.L.S.C. who provided him with daily care and companionship at his home in Aylmer for the last 3 years. In keeping with Walter's wishes and his lifelong interest in education, his body will donated to the University of Ottawa medical department and there will be no service.
