LEMNITZER Gen. Lyuian L. Lemnitzer, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was the speaker for the commissioning ceremonies for Army and Air Force ROTC Sunday morning and received an honorary Doctor of Laws defiee. A native of Honesdale and a West Point graduate. Gen. Lemnitzer served until World War II in various artillery assignments in the U S. and the Philippines During World War II, he was commanding general of the 34th Antiaircraft Brigade in England and during the Tunisian and Sicilian Campaigns He sened on Gen. Eisenhower's and Gen Mark Clark's staffs. Since World War II, he has served as a member of the joint strategic survey committee. Joint Chiefs of Staff; commanding general f the llth Airborne Division; commanding general of the 7th Division in Korea; deputy chief of staff for plans and research, and commander-in-chief, Far East and United Nations Commands and governor of the Ryuku Islands. Gen. Lemnitzer's decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit and he bss been awarded 19 foreign decorations. A native of Rockford, 111., h« received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Chicago. Following World War II service m the" U.S. Naval Reserve, he was director of university admissions at Columbia University and in 1951 he joined the state education department and became associate commissioner in 1955. Since 1957, Dr. Nyqiiist has been the commissioner's chief staff adviser and assistant on state education policy and program development, responsible for coordinating and developing the administration of the department's many programs and policies. Gen Edward J Stackpole, Harrisburg received an honorary Doctoi of Literature degree He graduated from Yale University in 1915, and earned a commission as captain in the Infantry. While on assignment to the 28th Division in World War I. he was seriously wounded in France and was hospitalized for two years. Between wars he was acme in the Pennsylvania National Guard and attained the rank of major general. Gen. S'ack- pole, now a prominent publisher and Harrisburg civic leader, has authored four books on the subject His book. "They Met at Gettysburg," is now m its fourth printing. Gen. Stackpole is a director and president of four corporations and is member of director and manager boards of several other institutions related to the public interest. DR. SECKLER-HUDSON Dr Catheryn Seckler-Hudson, dean of the school of government and public administration of American University, Washington, D. C.. received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. A native of Iowa, she is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State Teachers College and holds advanced degrees from the University of Missouri and American Unnersitv Graduate School. She nas served as a consultant to the Office of Education, Department of Interior and is a member of the executive council, American Societj for Public Administration and Society for Personnel Administration In other cuic activities, she is a lecturer at the National War College, Foreign Service Training School. National Security Agency. Civil Service Commission and other governmental agencies. She is a trustee of Helen Dwight Reid Educational Foundation, Inc . and is the author of publications on budgeting, management, planning and other phases of governmental operations, her latest being "A Government by the People" revised 1956. During her tenure, the original public assistance law of 1937 was passed. Mrs. Horting is a former vice chairman of the Democratic state Committee, a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, and is general superintendent of its Sunday School. She is a councilor of the National Lutheran Council and a member of its division of welfare. She is also a member of the Board of Christian Higher Education of the United Lutheran Church in America.
