A. Mehoney Peys Sfrikin Tribute to Their Achieve, tnents to Bonne Entente Address. 1 "Modern woman may step on the gas, go tip in the air, or out on sklis, or with a golf club or tennis racket or dance into the -wee small hour of th morning; but with all of this bravado or love of Ufa and laughter, or whatever else you prefer to call it there remains that deeper spiritual sense which nothing in the world baa aver destroyed or ever can destroy." With these words, Michael A. Ma-honey concluded a re marks bis tribute to women in a lecture last night on "Women and Their Work In World Progress," delivered before a large meeting of the Bonne Entente League of Canada in the Chateau Lsurier, featured by an unusually interesting program. It wa under the patronage of Their Excellencies th Governor General and th Countess of Beasborough.

Given Life Membership. At the earn meeting, Mr. Mahoney was honored by being presented with a life membership in the league for his services In helping along the work of the Bonne Entente- in Ottawa. In commencing his lecture. Mr.

Mahoney declared that hia subject wa one that had baffled philoeophersr sociologists, sexologists and a ecor of other ologists. The former editor of a wail-known publication for women that had aa enormous circul-tion. who had spent years writing ef woman, for women and about women, had written In hia final editorial: "As for woman, that charming, baffling, mysterioua creature, confess 1 do not understand her at all." perhaps with th valor of said Mr. Mahoney. "and stepping In where angels fear to tread, vantura to discuss a subieet for which you have probably decided, I have no qualification at ail." The speaker then went en to deal with his subject in a different way, not attempting to analyse, or psycho.

analyz woman' soul or emotion but to deal with woman's achievements msinly. There was no branch oi human pro. gres. or sphere or Human activity, na declared, in which women had not played a major part They had given to th world heroines, rulers, political leaders, mathematician, financiers, scientists, inventors, writers; and they had Inspired th beat achieve, ment in such things. In mem Th historic fact wa that without women there would have been no world pro gresa.

Th first hospital In th world wa built by a woman, a patrician lady ot Rom. Th history ef th human race had been brightened by the fade leas heroism of women like Florence -Nightingale and Edith Cavall who gave of their last measure of de-votlon to alleviate suffering and pain. He cited th mighty achievement of heroines like Joan of Arc Catherine of Russia and Elizabeth of England; of poet and writer like Sappho and George Sand, the Bronte and Eliza beta Browning and a host of otnars; of political leader like Madam da Stael; of scientists like Madam Curia, discoverer of radium; ef educators like Hilda, of Whitby; great extras like Rachel and Bernhardt and of wonderful singers such as Patti and Jenny JLind. In concluding hi tribute, Mr. Mahoney placed above all other virtue possessed by women, their ability aa "the colleague, the comrade, th tn- spirer of men." Were history to be re-written with due regard to women's ahare- in it many small case heretofore disregarded might be found to fully explain peat and unloosed for results.

The mightiest figure In history had given to their wives all credit for their achievements. Speaker. Mrs. Peter Heenan In conveying th appreciation of the meeting to Mr. Mahoney.
