PAGE FOURTEEN THE GETTYSBURG TIMES, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1982 OCTOBER 7, 1924 Alcohol and athletics just don't mix and the champion race horse Zev was living proof. His handlers today revealed that Zev's poor showing recently was 7.SAD THAT because he was poisoned- last spring: they accidently treated his leg injury with wood alcohol instead of grain alcohol. USED TBt A GREM Sports Briefs Angels lead 3-0 ANAHEIM, Cal. The California Angels held a 3-0 lead after three innings in the second game of the best-of- five series between the Angels and Milwaukee Brewers. After a scoreless first inning, Fred Lynn singled for the Angels in the bottom of the second.

One out later, Doug DeCinces doubled to send Lynn to third base. Bobby Grich was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Tim Foil singled to plate one run. Bob Boone laid down a squeeze bunt to bring in the second run of the inning. Reggie Jackson accounted for the third run with a home run in the third inning. 'Another great says Paterno By JOE PATERNO Penn State Football Coach We're looking forward to another great game this week, when we play at Alabama.

Last Saturday's "off" day was very important to our team. We needed a break after playing four straight games at home and the break gave us a chance to rest up from the bumps and bruises from the Nebraska game. Alabama is one of the outstanding teams in the country this year. They may be the best team. Certainly, they are in the class with all the outstanding teams on our schedule this year.

Alabama has an outstanding offense, which is as explosive as the Nebraska offense. I think that Alabama may be quicker than any team we have played this year and theyprobably have the best defense of any team we have They are a very explosive team on offense with several talented running backs and a dangerous quarterback in Walter Lewis, who not only is a fine ball handler and runner, but he proved last year against us that he is an excellent passer. He has done an excellent job throwing the ball this year. Alabama has as many talented athletes on defense as they do on offense. And they may have one of the best kicking combinations in the country with Peter Kim as the placekicker and Malcolm Simmons as the punter There's no doubt we will need a determined effort in the Alabama game.

We need to play better than we did in the Nebraska game. Flyers' Watson retires PHILADELPHIA (AP) Philadelphia Flyers de- fenseman Jimmy Watson retired Wednesday because of a back injury and will become a full time scout with the National Hockey League team, spokesman Jo Kadlec said. Watson played with the Flyers for nine years had a career 186 points on 38 goals and 148 assists and played in the NHL All-Star Game five times. He was one of three remaining Flyers, along with wing Bill Barber and center Bobby Clarke, to have played with the team's Stanley Cup championship squads in the 197374 and 1974-75 seasons. Watson, 30, had back surgery in 1980 and injured a different area of his back in training camo this vear Kadlec said.

Last season, Watson played in 76 of the Flyers' 80 games and had three goals and nine assists for 12 points. Flyers win 3-0 FAIRFIELD The Fairfield Flyers had a good day Sunday afternoon as they beat Emittsburg 3-0 in a Mason Dixon Soccer League game. The win is the third for the Flyers this season while they stand at 3-4 in the standings The play of the game was played mostly on Emmitsburg's end of the field while Fairfield constantly had shots on goal. Finally, around 10 minutes in the game Stan Thorton took a pass from Jim Frazee and pounded it into the right side of the goal. Thorton's goal was the only one in the first half while the Flyers constantly kept pressure on Emmitsburg.

In the second half, Frazee picked up his first goal of the day when the ball bounced off an Emmitsburg fullback and Frazee slammed the ball in the back of the net The play started from a corner kick by Kevin Deardroff Frazee's second goal came when Steve Donaldson crossed an excellent direct kick, when Frazee got a good head shot and placed it in the left side of the net Fairfield still kept pressure on while Todd Young John Weikert, Rick Sanders, Dave Deardroff and Steve Gutting controlled the midfield. The Flyers defenders Steve Donaldson, Kelly Gallantin and Clyde McClain and Ken Hames in the goal played superior defense, shutting Emmitsburg out and holding them to just six shots Other good plays for the Flyers came from Bob Florry Don Higgins and Murray Frazee on the offensive line Fairfield travels to McConnellsburg Sunday for a 1-30 p.m. match. NFL strike continues By IRA ROSENFELD AP Sports Writer WASHINGTON (AP) -The National Football League playprs union failed Wednesday to get permission in federal court to stage its own all-star games, and the NFL formally shortened the 16-week season by calling off next weekend's games.

The league said one of the three lost weekends will not be made up. The union, swamped by litigation from clubs seeking to keep their players out of the all-star games postponed Tuesday the first two of them, originally scheduled for Sunday in Washington and Monday night in Philadelphia. "Since three regular- season weekends of games have not been able to be played," the NFL's announcement said, "and in view of previous announcements that a maximum of two weekends of games could possibly be made up in the event of a prompt settlement, this means at least one weekend of games has now been lost for the season." The league did not specify which two would be made up. Commissioner Pete Rozelle has said two weekends could be salvaged by doing away with the wildcard first round of playoffs and making use of Jan. 23, the idle Sunday between the conference chamoionships and the Super Bow).

U.S. District Court Judge John Garrett Penn denied the union's request for a temporary injunction to block NFL teams from filing suit to prevent its all-star games, but also said the union could proceed with challenges to those parts of the standard contract which prevent players from participating in them. Penn also ruled that any additional suits filed by the league or its 28 clubs in this issue must be filed in federal district court "in the interest of efficiency, economy, uniformity and convenience. "It is a major step forward," union chief Ed Garvey said. According to Harvey Pollack, spokesman for the 76ers, the 26-year-old Cheeks came to Philadelphia Tuesday night from his home in Chicago to discuss his problem with club owner Harold Katz and general manager Pat Williams. Cheeks, through his agent, Lance Jay Luchnick of Houston, had informed the 76ers he wants to renegotiate his five-year contract. Cheeks reportedly has a pact that started at $150,000 per year and increases each year to a maximum of $250,000.

With the recent signing by the 76ers of Houston Rockets center Moses Malone a six-year pact for an estimated $2 million annually -there has reportedly been some restlessness among Malone's new teammates. However, Pollack said Cheeks was told by Katz and Williams that there would be no renegotiation of his contract at this time. And Cheeks, according to Pollack, then expressed concern about the possibility that he might be traded. However, Katz assured the 6-foot-l point guard that he was in the 76ers' future plans, Pollack said. On Monday, Williams told the Associated Press: "We don't want any scene.

If he comes back, all is forgotten." Pollack said Cheeks was told by Katz that he could sit down at some future date to discuss his contract, which still has four years to run. Cheeks returned to the 76ers camp at Franklin Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Tuesday night and participated in Wednesday's practice sessions.
