SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER Wednesday, Dn.Ler 13, 1995 7 COLLEGE BASKETBALL FSU sis nply siot ire Wm sin's class Ml ll'l from the field. Florida State's starters accounted for only eight field goals in the game and were just 2-for-24 in the first half. Collins said it would be a night to forget as the team must get ready for archrival Florida on Saturday. "We came out and couldn't do anything," said Collins, who said his arrest on Monday didn't affect him. "We played so poorly, what can you look at?" UMass 77, N.C.-Wilmington 51: At AmherBt, Edgar Padilla scored 17 points and Marcus Camby got some rest as No.

3 Massachusetts used an early 17-0 run to beat Minutemen coach John Calipari's former school. The Minutemen (6-0) missed their first six shots of the game but rebounded from an 8-2 deficit to take a 19-8 lead. It was 43-23 at halftime and N.C.-Wilmington (2-5) never got closer than 18. Women Louisiana Tech 92, Ohio St 65: Debra Williams had game highs of 26 points and nine rebounds, and Louisiana Tech's starters accounted for 85 points as the top-ranked Lady Techsters (8-0) routed Ohio State (6-3) in Ruston, La. Vanderbilt 76, S.

Illinois 43: In Carbondale, 111., Michelle Palmi-sano scored 18 points, all on 3-pointers, to lead No. 4 Vanderbilt (5-0) past Southern Illinois. Cold-shooting Seminoles trampled by No. 8 Huskies ASSOCIATED PRESS TALLAHASSEE, Fla. After a couple of losing seasons, Florida State coach Pat Kennedy thought his Florida State Seminoles were ready to play with the big boys again.

Eighth-ranked Connecticut had different ideas. The Huskies (7-1) opened a 29-point lead early in the second half Tuesday night and easily beat the Seminoles, 79-61. 'They faced us on all cyclin-ders," Huskies coach Jim Calhoun said. "We're pretty good right now." Ray Allen scored 22 points for Connecticut, which scored the game's first 11 points on the way to a 40-25 halftime lead Meanwhile, James Collins, Florida State's leading scorer, struggled one day after being arrested by local police for stalking a former girlfriend. He finished with 12 points on 3-of-16 shooting.

"Our defense was our No. 1 key tonight," Calhoun said. "We did a great job of taking away their offensive guy." Only two Florida State starters managed field goals in the first half as the Seminoles went 6-for-33 APPHLCOAIE UConn'i Antric Klaiber, left shows his defense is up to snuff as he blocks a shot by Florida State's Corey Louis. KNAPPfrom B-l BRONCOS from li Nash is tamed, but teammates kick in Sports Illustrated. The 6-foot-3, 195-poundcr from Victoria, B.C, who geems to wear a perpetual smile, will be a marked man the rest of the season.

"People want a piece of him," said Broncos coach Dick Davey, whose team improved to 6-1. Nash doesn't mind. "The SI thing was a great honor and a big thrill," he said. "You have to forget those things. I didn't think about it on the court." Neither did his teammates.

They were too busy trying to spoil Jerry Tarkanian's first visit to To- 60. The Bulldogs (3-4) moved out to a seven-point lead (46-39) with 12:04 remaining on point guard Dominick Young's second consecutive 3-pointer. But the Broncos pulled even with a 9-2 run, getting two field goals from forward Drew Zurek. Guard Marlon Garnett, who had missed the last two games with an ankle sprain, and center Brendan Graves also came up big in the second half. Garnett didn't start but scored a team-high 17 points, 11 in the second half.

His baseline trey with 2:10 left, his fourth of the game, lifted Santa Clara to a 61-55 advantage. Graves, who has been on a tear lately, added 14 points, nine after the break, and also collected a game-high 12 rebounds. In his last four games, he's averaged 14 points and nearly 11 boards. "A lot of the guys saw he (Nash) was struggling and needed to pick up their games," said Graves. What was Davey thinking when his team trailed by seven? "I was trying to figure out how I could get out of the gym and go somewhere else," he said.

Fresno State guard Kendnc Brooks, who played at Hartnell College in Salinas last year, led all scorers with 20 points, while center Rahsaan Smith, a product of Skyline High and Merritt College, added 17 points and nine rebounds. Having cracked the Top 25 for the first time since 1972, the Broncos have become targets. A loss won't ruin their season, but it might be a highlight for someone else. "I like the pressure of the ranking," said Davey, whose team has won five straight games and has held each opponent under 60 points. "We're not always handling it as well as we'd like.

I think it will pay dividends down the road." Nash admitted there's something special about national attention, and expects teams to be gunning for the Broncos. Bulldog fans chanted "Overrated" in the second half. "It was really ugly but we scrapped it out," said Nash. "The object is to win, not shoot 100 percent The guys really stuck together and helped me through a poor shooting night." COLLEGE NOTES ASU guard out because of seizures ey from some sponsors who wanted to help him join a summer team touring overseas. That was legal.

When he failed to raise enough money, then failed to take the trip, then failed to repay all of the money he had raised, Young was in foul territory. Item No. 2: Two weeks ago, two members of the 1995 recruiting class were declared ineligible for the rest of the season for not meeting academic qualifying standards. One young man's ACT scores had taken a suspiciously high leap after he signed with Fresno State. Three times he had taken the test and hit 15, too low for freshman eligibility.

Then he reached 21, and the bloodhounds howled. Asked to retake the test, he dipped back to 15. The other freshman had apparently received an OK on his high school curriculum before coming to Fresno State. The clearinghouse that reviews such matters ultimately said his choice of classes did not pass muster. It's reasonable to assume the NCAA applied itself with exceptional rigor when reviewing Tarkanian's first batch of recruits in Fresno.

Institution and individual are sworn enemies. It has put his teams on probation. He has taken it to the Supreme Court and lost at the buzzer, 5-4. His troublemaking is diluted with charm, wit and great basketball. His best one-liner underscores his belief that the NCAA prosecutes selectively.

"The NCAA is so mad atv Kentucky," Tarkanian said after a mid-'80s investigation against the sacred 'Cats yielded nothing but stonewalling alumni, "they're probably going to slap another three years' probation on Cleveland State." NOW, HE IS following the path of Eddie Sutton, who was swept out of Kentucky when the NCAA finally did catch the 'Cats. Both of them resurfaced at their alma maters, both able to say, with carefully maintained straight faces, that the NCAA had sanctioned their programs but cleared them. This spring, Sutton was back at the Final Four, triumphant, ostensibly redeemed, an old buddy rooting from the Oval Office. Tarkanian is 65 years old, more notorious, and working at a school without Oklahoma State's basketball pedigree. But anything is possible.

As a young fan in British Columbia, Nash said, he loved the Runnin' Rebels. "It was an honor (playing against Tarkanian)," Nash said. "He's a legend." Which is why the illiterate sign came out, why the fans booed his name in introductions, and surely why the sorry Bulldogs were tied with a nationally ranked team barely 4Vi minutes from the final buzzer. Jerry Tarkanian is back, causing trouble again. This Shark swims in troubled waters as the San Antonio Spurs coach Then Fresno State asked the best-known towel-muncher from the Class of '55 to leave the Strip for farm country.

The fans seated behind him on Tuesday night bore no resemblance to the denizens of Gucci Row. Denim jackets, sweat shirts and baseball caps predominated On the floor, the Bulldogs' zone, the yeoman's defense, matched the fashion statement. They dared not run with Santa Clara, risk exhaustion and humiliation. The UNLV team that scorched the nation in 91 is in the scrapbooks. Tarkanian will travel to Vegas on Monday to see the jerseys of Larry Johnson and Stacey Augmon retired.

He won't get any closer to such greatness this season. Which is not to say Tarkanian has thoroughly changed his style. The team's pregame notes hinted at some Rebels minus the Runnin'. Variations on the word "eligibility" cropped up several times. ITEM No.

1: Point guard Dominick Young had recently returned to the team after a four-game suspension imposed by the university for "handling monies in violation of NCAA rules." Specifically, he took mon ASSOCIATED PRESS Northern Arizona on Dec. 22. Holly is averaging 11.5 points and 2.5 assists in 20 minutes a game. In other news, the Pacific-10 Conference reprimanded Arizona State after determining a basketball player received money from a friend of an assistant coach five years ago. The conference did not identify the player, the assistant coach or the friend.

Ukrainian gets reprieve BATON ROUGE, La. LSU senior forward Roman Rubchenko, facing deportation to his native Ukraine, won a reprieve when U.S. immigration officials said he could remain in the United States at least until June 1. Rubchenko, 6-8 and 228 pounds, defected from the Ukraine National basketball team in 1991 when he was 17. He was denied political asylum and is considered on voluntary leave.

TEMPE, Ariz. ASU guard Lenny Holly, who has been bothered by seizures this season, will miss at least the next two games while doctors attempt to relieve his condition. Holly, a 6-foot-3-inch junior guard, has been on the prescription medication Dilantin since this summer, when he had a seizure and lost consciousness while driving in Los Angeles. He had a mild seizure on the bench during ASU's opener against Texas Southern and had another in practice Dec. 4.
