Vice President Al Gore called the FBI about a church arson after NFL star Reggie White, an associate pastor at the church, called him with concerns about the agency's probe, The Knoxville News- Sentinel has learned. The Rev. David Upton, senior pastor of the multi-racial Inner City Church, said the Green Bay Packer defensive end recently complained to Gore about the "direction" of the investigation into the Jan.

8 blaze. Upton snid White will be in Knoxville next weekend and might preach during church services Sunday, Feb. 25. The FBI on Thursday said it had "no comment" about White's call to Gore or the reason for its meeting with Upton at its Knoxville headquarters. Gore, who was en route to Tennessee on Thursday, could not be reached for comment.

Upton's statements about the meeting followed an award presentation, where he received $1,397 from prison inmates and staff to help rebuild the church. Upton said he and his brother, the Rev. Jerry Upton, met for 90 minutes with Virgil Young head of the FBI in Knoxville, and Richard Garner, head of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms in Tennessee. David Upton said that during the meeting, he gave Young and Garner a letter with a Knoxville postmark from an anonymous source that outlined specific concerns about the investigation.

Upton said the letter bad been addressed to him and White. However, Upton declined to elaborate on the letter's contents or publicly discuss his own concerns about the investigation. Upton then stated that While told Gore "how things are going," prompting Gore to call the FBI, which called Upton on Wednesday and arranged the meeting for Thursday. "Just talking with the heads in charge made us feel better," Upton said. "We feel like we have accepted some things today.

"They could not go into detail to tell us what was going on," Upton said adding he now believes federal investigators "want to do all that's in their power to apprehend" the perpetrator(s). "Overall, I think the meeting was very productive," he said. Upton ministers to inmates at the Morgan County Regional Correction Facility in Wartburg. Ever since inmates and staff heard of the fire, and the four messages of racial hatred found inside an annex that escaped the blaze, they have worked to collect money to help the rebuilding. The money that inmates and staff raised will be added to the funds that have been raised locally and across the country.
