Travel-weary Palmer is sentimental choice AKRON, Ohio (AP) Travel-weary Arnold Palmer, playing his third tournament in as many countries in as many weeks, was a sentimental choice to pick up his first title of the year in the $150,000 American Golf Classic. The 72-hole test, being played under a new format for the first time and lacking most of the great names of the game, starts today on the long, tough Firestone Country Club course.

FREE PARKING back after appearances in the Canadian and British opens, originally was scheduled to arrive Wednesday but made a last minute change of plan and now won't be in town until just before his tee time today. That won't give him a chance for a practice round but the par-70 Firestone layout is one he knows well. In 11 previous appear' ances, Palmer has won twice, been in the top 10 all but" two times "and holds the tournament record for money won in the event $67,562. Even though he's tired and in the midst of a longer-tban-usual string of consecutive appearances, the absence of many of the game's outstanding stars helps boost the odds in Palmer's favor. Among the missing, most of them still in Europe recov ering from the pressure-pack ed grind of the British are Lee Trevino, the Super Mes who made that dramatic defence of his British crown; Jack Nicklaus, the Masters and U.S.

Open champ whose bid failed by a single stroke at Murifield; England's Tony Jacklin and veteran Doug Sanders, the third and fourth place finishers in Scotland; Billy Casper and South African Gary Player. who cut down on his schedule this year but now is in the midst of a six-tournament string, has picked up mis season despite blowing chances for tbJee tournament titles. His chief opposition bere is expected to come from de-fen i title-holder Jerry Heard, Tom Weiskopf and Australian Bruce Crampton. Dawson against series without Bobby Hull (By The CP) The man who pulled Canada out of the world hockey championships two years ago says he would prefer no series against the Russians in September to a series without Bobby Hull in it. Earl Dawson of Rivers, was president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association when Canada withdrew from the world tournament in 1970 because the sport's international governing body denied the Canadians permission to include nine professionals on their team.

Today be is a director of Hockey Canada, the organization of government, business and sports officials sponsoring a team of professionals which is scheduled to play eight games against Russia this fall. Dawson, who will attend a meeting of Hockey Canada di-rectors shortly to review Hull's status, told a Winnipeg news conference Tuesday, "the people don't want the NHL dictating to us." Furthermore, he contended that the Hockey Canada directors had never approved the clause requiring players to sign their contracts. It was an "exclusive" arrangement between NHL president Clarence Campbell and Hockey Canada's executive committee that had not been submitted to the board for ratification. The Raiders revealed they also are considering legal action. Three of the players they announced as signing Bill Flett, Dave Schultz and Mike Robitaille later signed -con tracts mth the teams which have the NHL rights to their services.

Harry Glickman, president of the Portland Bucgaroos, said he was going to take legal action to prevent "piracy" of players from the club. "I can't minimize the seriousness of the loss of a fine goal keeper such as McLeod," he said. "It is a bitter blow personally' to me because on his representation that he wanted to play in Portland, I just recently paid $20,000 to the St. Louis Blues for his contract In Los- Angeles, the WHA 1 OPEN Mon. Combination punching Muhammad Ali's key By MIKE HUGHES UPI Sports Writer DUBLIN, Ireland Muhammad All floored Al "Blue" Lewis of Detroit, once Wednesday night but Lewis still was on his feet when Ali was awarded a technical knockout triumph in the 11th round of their 12-round heavyweight bout at Croke Park. The 3 0-year-old former champion was not as light on his feet as of old, but the cumulative effect of his combination punching forced referee Lew Erskin, editor of a boxing magazine, to stop the bout after one minute, IS seconds of the round. Ali, who conceded six pounds by coming to scale at 21714 pounds, had the 29-year-old Lewis down for a count of nine in the fifth round but was unable to complete the job until the 11th.

The end came when All ripped a left into Lewis' face and with the Detroit fighter unable to defend himself Erskin stepped in to end it There was pandemonium immediately after as the ring was invaded by Ali fans in the 20,000 audience and a couple of small boys were trampled in the melee. There was such chaos at the end of the fight that the boxers were unable to leave the ring and the organizers had to appeal to the crowd to return it its seats. Ali, who entered the ring with a head cold, did not display the fastest feet in the business and only twice dur-. ing the 11 rounds did he use his famous shuffle. On occasions he looked ponderous and flat-footed as he fought at close quarters with Lewis.

A 1 i who stopped Jerry Quarry June- 27 in his last fight, concentrated his attack to the body in the early rounds before switching to the head where he rained in left and right combinations. Lewis, a former convict turned social worker, earned the cheers for his refusal to give in. Several times he appeared on the verge of being knocked out, but he always came back fighting.
