(AP)- House passed, 250- 129, and sent to the Senate today a bill suspending for three, years import duties on certain grades of coarse wool imported for the manufacture of rugs and carpets. Wools of Grade 40 or coarser have been admitted duty free since 1930. The House passed bill extends the duty free list to finer carpet wools up to Grade 46 for the benefit carpet manufacturers current-1905 sly unable to fill their needs in this country. The Ways and Means Committee reported to the House that prewar coarse wool sources such as Communist China and Tibet have been lost to the United States, and that the carpet industry is now squeezed between high priced raw wools and increased carpet imports.

Henry David Gray, professor emeritus of English at Stanford University, died at Palo Alto Hospital Monday night after a brief illness. He was 84. Doctor Gray, a native of Plainfield, N. received his bachelor's degree from Col. gate University.

He joined the Stanford teaching staff in after receiving his dootorate from Columbia University. During the 1920s, Doctor Gray was a member of the National Board of Motion Picture Review and the National Committee for Better Films. In 1929 and 1930 he served in London as director of the American Universities of Europe. Many of Doctor Gray's original plays were produced at Stanford. He retired from active teaching in 1939, Doctor Gray, a founder of the Palo Alto Unitarian Church, lived at 612 Alvarado Row on the Stanford campus.

He is survived by his widow, Emily, and two children, Mrs. Dorothy Carlton and Sydney MacLean Gray. Funeral arrangements are in charge of Roller and Hapgood, Palo Alto. Last Rites Today For Emma White Sis. Stock Div.

White died suddenly at her home at 1011 Cragmont Ave. in Berkeley on Monday. She was 82. She was a member of the University Mothers Club and the Berkeley Community YWCA. She is survived by two sons, William A.

White, former vice president and general counsel of Pacific National Fire Insurance Comanpy, and Arlington C. White. Both are attorneys in San Francisco, A third son, Edward, former trust officer of Wells Fargo Bank, died in 1950. Gale spoke at the Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist, at Clay and Divisadero Sts. on 'Christian Science: Religion for the Present and the Future." Commenting on the rent widespread use of quilizing drugs, she said: "Does this not point to humanity's need for mental peace in this age of speed and stress? A deadening drug is a pitiful substitute for the power of God to comfort and sustain." According to the teachings of Christian Science, she said, God, the all-loving divine Mind, is reflected by man in spiritual qualities such as intelligence, purity and wisdom.
