Written for a Martha Graham dance drama, Barber's piece was thoroughly effective theater music not vulgar, yet leading the-atrlcally from its first pathos to a tremendous last impact. Schippers will repeat his program tonight and tomorrow afternoon. He's a conductor we ought to hear more of next winter, without question.

jl CAPiocfi icouiir jj NEW YORK, Feb. 23 -Jamcs Garner admits it sounds crazy he gave up being Marilyn Monroe's leading man to go into a picture with Steve McQueen. "YOU swapped Marilyn for Steve?" 1 practically hissed. "I didn't! Mirisch did." Jim shook his head and looked into his beer at Toots Shor's. "Doesn't seem like a fair swap, does it?" Jim was set to make husbandly love to Marilyn in "Something's Got to Give" at 20th Century-Fox.

Mirisch Brothers were fearful he wouldn't be finished with MM in time to start "The Great Escape," in which he buddies with Steve McQueen, and exercised the right of pre-emption. "Who's your leading lady in that?" I asked Jim, who has been leading man to Kim Novak, Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine. "I have yet to hear of a woman in 'The Great Escape'," he confessed. "Just a couple hundred men. "I'd love to work with Marilyn," he added, unnecessarily.

"But I'm not going to cry ovpr it. However, I've wondered who's going to get it Rock Hudson, Jack Lem-mon, John Gavin, Stevei Forrest? (Why don't they give Earl Wilson a chance? He was terribly good in high school dramatics.) Some guy's going to get lucky and he doesn't even know it. EARL'S PEARLS: In tha old days a man had only to worry about some one elso getting his job. CARL FOREMAN cables from London that he is de-' lighted with the news that "Guns of Navarone" won seven Academy nomina- enced in opera as he is In concert. Hence the tense force of his performance of Samuel Barber's "Medea's Meditation and Dance of Vengeance" aroused last night's audience to shouts of bravo. The one performance on his program that lacked the finish of the rest was that of Bach's "Suite" No. 4. But immediately there after, Schippers created a particularly beautiful pastel tone picture in Debussy's "Clouds." He made the same composer's "Festivals" sparkle, except when he let his trumpets sound too brassy for so subtle a score.

It was surprising how fresh a sound Schippers and his orchestra gave to the hearty, simple melodrama and tunes of Verdi's "Forza del Destino" Overture. "I've just set a deal with Harold Hecht to buy 'Monsieur an hilarious comedy which we'll make later In the year for Universal release. Philip Rapp and Richard Powell wrote it and it's one of the funniest things I ever read about a man and a dog who both love the same girl!" But from the mixture, one all important and happy fact emerged clearly: This young American Is an encrmously gifted, magnetic conductor, masterly beyond his years. He gives luminously fresh, individual feeling even to the most familiar music.

Amid all his dynamic, Imaginative freedom of expression, his sense of musical pace is sure, not erratic. He holds his performances, flexible though they are, in an artistically unified, logical control. Under his leadership, the San Francisco Symphony (except for one unjellcd opening performance) had a sense of direction, a coordination of tonal and expressive character that it all too often lacks nowadays. By his temperament and his grip of rhythm, Schippers can be exciting, too. After all, he is as experl- 2nd FUN-FILLED WEEK! Rock Hudson Doris day tdny randall JAMIE EDIE ADAMS JACK KRUSCHEM tnd MIT!
