A plastic model of a P51 American Apache, still in the box, harkened by to the youthful fascination with planes of Paul Sr.

It was bought for him when he was 14 years old in a shop on the boardwalk in Wild- wood, N.J., in 1945. "I drove my father crazy to buy that, and that's as far as it ever got," he chuckled. The collection continues in the hangar that houses the antique aircraft. Walls are lined with propellers, wing frames, wheels and more. Bare-frame fuselages hang from the rafters.

"A lot of the items hanging on the walls have a home in a project somewhere," noted Paul Sr. It just never stops with the Doughertys, who have nearly outgrown the existing structures at the airfield. They're already planning a new hangar maybe a steel structure that could also support planes hanging from the ceiling. lost control of their hobby somewhere near the start of their fourth antique airplane restoration project. They had finished their first plane, a 1949 Cessna 195 Businessliner they bought in 1985, and "had a lot of fun with it," according to Paul who pilots 767 jetliners for American Airlines. They had moved on, through restorations of a 1932 Taylor E2 Cub, which was the predecessor to the famous Piper Cub, and a Great Lakes biplane they located in Virginia; And, they were out of space in the vicinity of the now-closed Warrington Airport, a Bucks County facility that bordered their backyard. Rather than give up their hobby, the Doughertys began shopping around for new digs, which they found in the 50-year-old Grimes Airfield at 371 Airport Road, Bethel. The result is the Golden Age Air Museum, a constantly expanding collection of antique airplanes, equipment and memorabilia housed in a growing array of hangars and other buildings, open to the public from 10 a.m.

to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 am. to 5 p.m. Sundays. "The museum idea sort of started out as a joke," said Paul Jr.

"When we got our fourth plane, our family asked, 'What are you going to do with all the We said, 'Start a museum'." Even when they bought the airfield in 1996, the Doughertys were simply looking for a home for their collection and home sites for themselves. They've subdivided about 10 acres from the original 62, where Paul Sr. already lives in a new home and Paul Jr. is in the process of building. However, the plane won't be ready for the Doughertys' intended purpose for it public rides by the sixth annual Summer Antique Aeroplane Show Saturday and Sunday, July 6-7, at the museum. (They expect as many as 100 airplanes, some antique and some new, to come into the airport over the two days of the show, which has grown in each of its five previous years.) "It's just nice to stand here and see it looking like an airplane," said an exhausted Paul Jr. The Bird came to them in pieces, just the way they bought it after it was crashed near Detroit. Other parts and pieces of planes, most destined for restorations already planned, make up a substantial portion of the museum's highly changeable collection.

A vintage World War I engine, never flown, occupies one corner of the museum. It's on temporary display from Andrew King, a regular at the museum who plans to install it into a Newport 28 fighter plane he's restoring. 114 4th St. Port Carbon, PA (570) 628-2678 101 N. Lehigh Ave.
