LEOKliM If you had a glass of water and put a few drops of red coloring matter into it, the water would turn red. Somewhat the same thing happens with our blood. The blood Is a mixture of liquids and solid particles.

The liquid part of the blood is call ed plasma. About 80 per cent Of this plasma is water. In this plasma are dissolved all the materials the body needs to build tissues, the chemicals that control life, and the wastes of the body. But the plasma is a little more than 50 per cent of the volume of the blood. The rest of it consist of the solid particles we mentioned before, and these are red corpuscles, white corpuscles, and platelets.

The, red corpuscles are what make the blood look red, and they are the most numerous solid particles in the blood. There are about 300 million of them in a single drop of blood! The white corpuscles are about one to every 700 of the red, and the platelets are about one to every 20 red corpuscles. cacn rea corpuscle is like a sac containing a material called "hemoglobin." This It made up ot -nematin, -which contains iron, and globln, which is a protein. Because of the iron In the hemathr, the hemoglobin can unite easily with oxygen, When the red cells are fn the the hemoglobin picks up oxygen to form oxyhemoglobin. This It what makes the blood in the arteries bright red.

But as the red blood moves on from the arteries to the capillaries (the smaller blood vessels), the corpuscles give up some of their oxygen. And exchange takes place, the oxygen going to the cells and the cells giving up carbon dioxide, which is a waste product. When the red corpuscles give up some of their oxygen in the capillaries, the blood turns darker. This is why when you iook at veins through your skin they appear to be blue. They contain darker blood than in the arteries.

When this blood from the Is exposed to the air ft sometimes looks red because the hemoglobin on the surface turns to oxyhemoglobin. giMiMMimwwHiimiMiminnHiirMiMiMi LINOLEUM TILE .9 9 7c Meh Call Uf 'Now II II I I For Free Estimates CAPITAL TILE FLOORING I I 340 Bank St. 733-7525 I a urmrnmwfwaurminnrwimmnhwiS i.V II t- ONCE THE Of Ufa I Sm, AAIS5 swTTTrl rJall f- WATER BE6AN 1 1 MK5HT BEAZLY VrDlSrjHT 1 I OX-TAIU SOUP'fWeU, TO BOtLmTHE HAVE LIKE AE TO JOSAMAO A CAM ore UZ-J iroSS eEA2LY; IT DUMB OX KNOWN TEU.
