---------------Leader Of 'Geriatrics Gang' Gets New Pact--------------Redskins Put Long Range Faith In Allen Friday, July 15, 1977. -B7 WASHINGTON (AP) George Alien will be coach and general manafer of the Wash mgton Redakins for at least four more seasons under a contract signed Thursday a pact described by his as one of die best in the National Football League Redskins President Edward Bennett Williams said Allen had agreed to terms on four-year extension of his current seven-year pact, wtucfc expires after the 1177 season, "at a very substantially increased salary The Washington Post report had several inaccuracies Among other things the Post story said the Allen contract put the Washington coach at the U.S. Team Williams also described as published report placing new salary at Adds Medals The team president declined to same salary as the two highest paid coaches in the NFL John McKay at Tampa Bay and Chuck Fairbanks of New England i think George Alien deserves one of the bat contracts in coaching and I think he has Williams toid a news conference don't know if it is the best, the second best or the third prepared statement in which his fsther said, Tm pleased this is settled before training camp It helps our entire organisation major consideration my decision to remain with the Red skins is the ardent support that has been shown by the Redskins fsns during the past six he said The tremendous effort of our players has made theae At Maccabiah TEL AVIV United Harry Foehner Inside On The Outdoors Fish or Skunks on Flags WHEN THE BOATS come in during the Port Mansfield Fishing Tournament July 20 to 24 and the Texas International Fishing Tournament on South Padre Island Aug 3 to 7, sightseers on the docks will be straining their eyes to see what kind of flags are flying These flags may indicate what the fishermen have caught or show that they were blanked but there is no uniformity, the kind of banner varying from one fishing locality to another That is why the International Game Fish Association is trying to standardize fishing flags Duane Harris of La Feria, who has yielded the weigh- master's chores in the TIFT to Dr. Bruce Cox of San Benito after more than 30 years of service, says there have been changes in the flags used here over the years. He said he went through his possessions recently and found some of the flags used here in the thirties He found some of the old marlin and sailfish flags but none of those reserved for tuna, dolphins and other fish.

Sailfish flags usually show this billfish in white on a blue or red background and marlins white on blue depending on where the boats are coming from because customs vary at Corpus Christi and other Texas ports. A commonly used signal when a fisherman has drawn a blank is a flag showing a skunk. Or, lacking such a flag the skipper may fly trousers, shirts, panties or even bras Flags also are used for other purposes, according to the IGFA. For example, a solid red rectangular flag is flown in most areas of the world to warn other boats to keep their distances when an angler is fighting a fish. Also Flags for Tagging ALSO, A TRIANGULAR red flag with a white is flown in most waters to indicate that a fish has been tagged or released.

The IGFA is gathering information on the kind of fishing flags now in use so that the shape, material and sizes as well as design can be standardized. Also the manner in which they are flown. Both Valley offshore tournaments are conducted under IGFA rules and regulations. THE LAST LEGISLATURE may have given the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department an authority it may exercise with reluctance and that is the right to commission deputy game wardens who would serve without pay. The department has bad memories of previous experiences with deputy wardens and we expect that under the new law it will show a considerable restraint in commissioning them.

Such deputies would serve at the will of the department executive director and be commissioned for not more than four years. They may enforce state game and fish laws within geographical areas prescribed by the department. They may not serve on coastal waters, bays or estuaries. BOWMEN WILL BE able to hunt upland game birds with shotguns during the regular anrchery season was the result of a law passed by the last legislature. It permits archers to have a shotgun in their possession so long as they have shot no larger than number four in general law counties and number six in regulatory counties (which includes the Valley).

Although this will enable archers to take upland birds with a gun, the weapon may not be used for taking deer, turkey or javelina. An exception that occurs to us is the special bow hunts such as the ones on the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge where you cannot take a gun under any circumstances. New Turkey Regulations THERE MAY BE three turkey tags on your hunting license this year but you will not be able to take more than two gobblers during the fall season The third tag is for the spring turkey hunts in limited areas. Turkey tags must be used the same way as deer tags, remaining with the bird until it reaches a processing plant or permanent residence of any person having a dead wild turkey. Incidentally, exempt hunting licenses will coat more this year No exempt licenses are required for fishing, anglers needing to carry only proof of age as in a license.

Exempt hunting could be on same basis except for the deer and turkey tags required. IT MAY APPEAR a little early to be issuing the Texas Hunters Directory but there are many nimrods who like to do their planning early and for them the book can be of great assistance. The 1977-78 edition, of which we have just received a copy, has added some new sections of North Texas, Trans Peeos-Panhandle Plains, bowhunung, bird hunting and a new out-of-state outfitters section The 164-page book details more than 300 choice hunting leases for hunting by day, week, month, season or All information is current and updated. It also includes lease hunting information for over three million acres plus a million acres where hunting is free. Deer, dove, turkey, javelina, wild hog, duck, goose, quail, varmit and exotic game opportunities are detailed.
