Tuesday, Oct 7, 1958 Auburn Rated The Victoria hfTf 8 Boosters Told Stingarees Expecting Rugged Contest Meredith Remains in Hospital Nation am meeting and were unable to join the Boosters until late in the it's any faster their backfield is small and faster than he said. Williams, Proctor, Roberts Watch Series In Neiv York Among 'the spectators at Yankee Stadium were Derrest Victoria baseball club; Fred Proctor, attorney for Tom O'Connor and Morris Roberts, president While in New York, they planned meetings with baseball execu tives of major league clubs and upon their return Wednesday, it is probable that an announcement of much importance for Victoria's 1359 baseball picture will be made. It is believed that the subject of these discussions will concern working agreements for next summer. Victoria hasn't signed any pact yet with the Los Angeles Dodgers for another season.

And it stands to reason that unless the Dodgers can promise something better than an eighth place, then the Rosebuds may hook up with some other organization. With three AAA teams to feed and with the problem of supplying Los Angeles with a winner, the Dodgers find it very difficult in sending good Texas League players to play for Victoria's Texas i evening In business developments the Boosters decided to set back the starting time for their weekly gatherings to p.m. President Cloyce Pearson reported there still were some seats to be filled on the special bus to Port Arthur Fnday and the dead line will be Wednesday. Reservations for the $8 round trip can be made by phoning Pearson at HI 5-1449 before 6 p.m. School board president W.

D. O'Neill reported the board had approved additional paving for the stadium parking lot and removal of a light post which ob structs the view on the North side stands. "But we'll probably have to wait until the season is over to do anything about it," he added. O'Neill also mentioned there had been some discussion about fly ing the team to Haruneea for its Oct 17 game. Boosters were told special red hats they ordered to be worn at games are expected to arrive Wednesday.

Alley's scouting report revealed the Stingarees will be up against a line of equal size for the first time this season. "Their line is as big as ours but I don't think League team. One thing is for sure. Tom O'Connor is determined to have a winner here in 1969. He suffered deeply through the.

Best in By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The experts, who have had a little trouble agreeing on the early rankings of major college foottball teams, fell back on an old reliable Monday 1957 champion Auburn. The rugged Plainsmen, who strenuously resist efforts to score against them, moved to the No. 1 spot in the weekly Associated Press poll of sports writers and broadcasters after Oregon's de fense deflated Oklahoma. Auburn became the third team in as many weeks to hold the No.

1 spot. Ohio State, the re-season pick, led the first weekly poll then Oklahoma moved up last week. But last Saturday's Oklahoma's Sooners barely squeezed out a 6-0 decision over than -un ranked Oregon and Ohte State had its second close call, beating Wash ington 12-7. Auburn rolled to a 30-8 victory over a suprisingry rough Chattanooga team. 12 -Teams Unbeaten in AAA Ranks By THB ASSOCIATED PRESS The Class AAA division of Texas schoolboy football reaches the halfway point in the schedule this week with 12 undefeated, untied teams left but with the favorites coming from among the outfits whose records have been besmirched.

Breckenridge took a tumble last week, losing to lass AAAA Abilene 22-0, but it did nothing to soften the Buckaroos as state championship contenders. Sweetwater and Cleburne are the other top-rated teams. The former has been defeated, by ureckenndge. and Cleburne has been twice tied. The undefeated, untied teams are Phillips, Weatherford, Mineral Wells, Diamond Hill, Handley, tannage, Nacogdoches, Killeen, San Marcos, San Antonio Sam Houston, Uvalde and Kingsville.

Undefeated but tied are Cleburne, Brenham, South San Antonio and El Campo. Killeen and Handley could run into trouble this week, the former meeting Temple and the latter clashing with Irving, both Class AAAA teams. Brenham and El Campo tackle each other. frirst conference games are scheduled Friday but only one district is involved District 7, where six of the seven teams are in championship action. Baseball news here during the off season promises to be very interesting. Don Miles Reports To Fort Chaffee Don Miles, top Victoria baseball performer in 1957 and 1938, who expected to make a strong bid for a spot in the Dodgers' outfield next season, left here Sunday for Fort Chaffee, where he will wear Uncle Sam's khaki for the next six months.

In the Little World Series in which Minneapolis beat Montreal four straight. Outfielder Tom Davis of the Royals got three hits in 16 times at bat for .188, and Catcher Dan Gatta, also of the Royals, had two out of eight for .250. Montreal was elated because its Internationa League team, which finished last in 1957, performed what is considered the baseball miracle of coming in first in 1958. That's the Victoria goal for 1959. Tom Borland, who pitched for Minneapolis, should be remembered by Victoria baseball fans.

Several years ago when he was an Oklahoma University student, he pitched for the Plymouth Oilers of Sin ton and hurled against the semi-pro Rosebuds, who were managed by Allen Winters. Borland is a big. left bander, who probably will be given a chance with the Boston Red Sox next spring. Bottler And Ackeret Released Baseball news is being released in other sections. For instance: Montreal has recalled First Baseman Tim Harkness from Des Moines.

This is the young man, who opened the season with the Rosebuds. Richmond has purchased Rod Kanehl who played fine ball the outfield, at shortstop and second base for Dallas. Vancouver has purchased Second Baseman Bob Gaffery and Outfielder Hank Moreno from San Antonio. Austin has released Catcher Roa Bottler and Infiekter Fred Marsh and Jim Ackeret Dallas has sold Catcher Bob Rand to Houston. San Antonio has obtained Pitcher Dizzy Dean Higginbotham, Third Baseman Martin Rosell and Utility Dave Newkirk from Albuquerque; and has bought Pitcher Al Osorio from Monterrey.

He singled out guard Rufus Williams, quarterback Windell Hebert and halfback Pepper Smith as outstanding individuals in the Yellow Jacket lineup. "Smith looks like he's very fast Hebert is a fine passer they throw the ball a lot and I thought Williams was as good as any man on the field," Alley said. The husky line coach said the Stingarees had "a very poor practice" Monday. "I guesss tt was the weekend layoff," he decided. There was one slip of optimism in his report Early in the pro gram he said, "We feel like we have a good chance if our boys are as ready as they were for Spring Branch, but of course you cant tell this early in the week.

The late-arriving Wood two important announcements: He plans no changes in his starting lineup as the Stings bid for victory No. 4 in a row. 2. The long-awaited new uniforms have arrived but it has not been decided whether the Stings will wear them Friday night Morrall, a former Michigan State star, in 1357 from the San Francisco 49c rs for lineman Marve Matuszak and two draft choices. Layne, former Texas University star, is in his 12th season in pro fessional football.

He was drafted by the Chicago Bears, later played for the old New York Bulldogs, men came to Detroit, where he played under Parker, former coach of the Lions. In 11 seasons of pro ball, Layne has tossed 129 touchdown passes. He's attempted 2,518 passes and completed 1,233 for 17,567 yards. In 1956 be led the league in scor ing with 99 points. There was no money involved in the deaL Coach Buddy Parker of the Steelers said he made the trade because Layne 'is a top flight quarterback." Parker added: "I cant think Morrall was a top flight quarter back.

He may be in the future. But he isn right now. "Layne will help us immense ly," Parker said. We've got our running game going and we've got good receivers. Steers Due managed a win over Oklahoma since 1951.

The mighty Sooners trounced powerful West Virginia 47-14 and Oregon 6-0 earlier this season and is ranked No. na tionally. Texas hopefuls don't expect any runaway because of the Steers showing in defeating Georgia, Tulane and Texas Tech earlier this season. Tech fell 12-7 Satur day night mainly because of a strong defense game and unexpected activity shown by previously inept second and third string units. Saturday's game with Oklahoma will be the second for Texas Coach Darrell Royal who helped the Sooners defeat Texas in 1948 and 1S49.

Last year in Royal's first term as Longhorn coach his alma mater plastered the Texans 21-7. In the 52-year-old series the Longhoms have won 30 games. Oklahoma has 20 wins and two contests ended in ties. The game is a big attraction of the annual State Fair in Dallas and for the past 12 years has been a sellout Early this year Texas and Oklahoma officials announced that the Cotton Bowl's 76,000 seats had been sold out The Steelers acquired (UPI Telepbotoj BOBBY LAYNE ex-Longhorn 1 I the three World Series games hi Williams, general manager of the of the Rosebud Boosters Quo. splendid sportsman that he is.

But those teams don have the power you run up against in the Big Ten." And, as a matter of fact, Pur due's defense not only has kept its goal line clean but has kept its two opponents practically out of communicating distance with paydirt, beyond the 25 yard line. Key to it has been Coach Jack Mollenkopf's changing defense which shifts' the combination on nearly every play.

For one thing, Meek doesnt know yet whether Don Meredith, quarterback and passing ace, will be able to play at Columbia, Mo. Meredith suffered a badly bruised left hip as Notre Dame overwhelmed SMU 14-6 last weekend. He'll set out of the hospital Tuesday but the hip still is very sore. Meek also was concerned over Missouri's multiple offense, which he said is quite different from anything the Mustangs have faced.

After the battering against Notre Dame, he also worried about a mental letdown. Missouri trimmed SMU 7-6 here last fall. Bobby Hunt, a 240-pound sopho more, moved up to No. 2 left guard in place of Bobby Mitchell, who broke his collarbone in two places battling the Irish. Broyles pushed Billy Kyser up to the first team to replace half back Freddy Akers and promoted Leslie Letsinger to first team left end to relieve Billy Tranum. He also moved Marlin Epp to tne right tackle spot of Paul Henderson.

The changes involving Kyser and Letsinger were made for kicking reasons, Broyles said The Razorbacks have been weak in punting all season. He quoted the former Cincin nati Redleg field boss saying: "It's costing me in the neighborhood of $40,000 to accept my new position but I'm sure over a period of years it will pay off for me, both from a financial and health standpoint" Smith said Tebbetts told him he had an attendance clause in his Redleg contract and indicated he made over $50,000 in 1956 and 1957, the two years the homer- hitting Reds drew over a million fans at home. With a 47-14 victory over West Virginia and a 6-0 decision over Oregon, top-ranked Oklahoma will receive its big test Saturday, according to Wilkinson. The Sooner coach pointed out Texas always is the best test because "we're better organized when we meet Texas, the game has all the tradition, it is closely contested, and there is an added incentive. "This Texas team is stronger by a considerable margin than a year ago.

I don't know what kind of a team we have now. But well know this time next week." Reflecting on the Oregon con test, Wilkinson said it is obvious we felt fortunate to win.
