A popular and widely known former head jailer at the El Paso County Jail, Raymond O'Rourke of the 1600 block of St. Johns, died Sunday. He was 75.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in Harding-Orr and McDaniel Montana Chapel. Graveside services will be at 1 a.m. Friday in Evergreen Alameda Cemetery. "The man's life is best summed up by the fact that (a man who had spent 18 years in prison) was in the hospital lobby crying, because the man was dying." County Judge Pat O'Rourke in describing his uncle.

Raymond O'Rourke began working at the El Paso County Jail on Easter Sunday in 1934. He was hired by thenSheriff Chris P. Fox. Eight years later, O'Rourke was promoted to head jailer and captain and served in that position for 30 years. During his career at the jail, he proved to be very popular among staff and prisoners alike.

He was described by his nephew as a positive but private man who wanted to help. "He had no fear of reaching out a helping hand. But I never knew him to ask for help," the judge said. The younger O'Rourke also credits his uncle with playing a major role in his success in local politics. "Because he had no children, I was very close to him," the judge said.

"I grew up around the courthouse having no idea I would get into the business." But when the younger O'Rourke did decide to get into politics, his uncle was his biggest supporter. Because he served under several sheriffs, Raymond O'Rourke became knowledgeable about El Paso politics at precinct level. This proved to be "tremendously valuable" for his nephew's political start, Pat O'Rourke said. Raymond O'Rourke also supported his nephew financially and was the judge's only $1,000 contributor.
