Just $199.90 Of course, such a shift of focus tends more to be a matter of perception rather than substance in the case of a show such as "Family Ties." Like most really successful comedy series, it is an ensemble show, with no one cast member being the real star.

Done with restrained wit and insight, the series generates honest humor in examining one family's generation gap. Birney and Gross as the parents are two '60s liberals who have come to terms with the establishment. Fox is their preppy, neo-conservative son in college. Justine Bateman is their 17-year-old daughter who cannot imagine not having an active social life. Tina Yothers is their younger daughter, balancing her tomboy tenden-1 cies with a new interest in boys.

Added to the mix this season is an infant son, written into the show last season as a result of Birney's real-life pregnancy. The relationship between parents and children is close and loving, even if it sometimes resembles an armed truce with each side trying to understand the other. "Family Ties" airs at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays on Channel 9-KTSM. ByBLUHayden Gannett News Service Class is such a rare commodity on television that whenever it crops up, it merits a hearty round of applause.

So, let's hear it for both Michael J. Fox and his bosses at "Family Ties." The 25-year-old Fox had been kicking around, doing guest appearances on assorted television series, when he was signed on in 1981 as older brother Alex Keaton on "Family Ties," where he has been very successful the past four years. With the recent release of "Back to the Future" and the earlier-made "Teen Wolf," however, he also became a major feature film draw, a very hot 'property in Hollywood. Apparently unfazed by the lure of big buck offers for him to star in more movies, he had the class and professionalism to do what in my opinion only a handful of television performers in similiar circumstances have done in the past. He elected to stay with the weekly series that first brought him to the public's attention.

Any movie work while the series remained on the air, he said, would be done during the summer months, when "Family Ties" is out of production. By remaining with the series, Fox ensures he keeps a high visibility with his fans. For their part, executive producer Gary David Goldberg and his staff displayed equal class by subtly shifting the highly ranked show's emphasis so that it falls less on Meredith Baxter Birney and Michael Gross and more on Fox, thus capitalizing on his popularity with increasing his visibility. It is an ideal instance of one Hollywood hand washing the other. But what about the woman who wants the look of a full-length fur but can't afford it? "These (fake furs) are for the woman who wants a fur coat for parties but doesn't think she'll use it enough to pay full price," said Irene Perez, a salesclerk at Penneys. The store carries several styles of faux fur coats: Full and jacket-length sable-colored mink and silver fox look-alikes.

The only real fur coats in their stock are rabbit jackets. "They're selling well," Perez said, referring to both the fake furs and the rabbit Jackets. Although the department's best-sellers are lightweight "toppers" in off-white, grape, red or black, the purple and gray stripe classic-styled coats are selling well, too. A gray or brown and white tweed with stand-up collar and contrasting facing is one of the most popular coats. Also available are camel-colored coats of Kashmiracle, an arncl and nylon copy of cashmere.

The copycat, like the natural cashmere, is lightweight and warm. with a big pin on the lapel near the neck to make it more casual," she said. Veran Steckel, coat and designer room buyer at The Popular, said she thinks most people misunderstand the way coats are supposed to fit. "I always encourage people to buy a coat large enough to wear over jackets and bulky sweaters," she said. "A coat should fit well through the shoulders." Steckel said the woman's coat should be 2 to 3 inches longer-than the hem of the skirt.

"Coats are expensive. They're an investment, and you should get your money's worth. You should be able to wear a coat three seasons," she said. Wheeler said a person who plans to buy a coat should try on at least five. "I wouldn't set my mind to buy that day, and I'd try all sorts of things high colors and plaids," she said, explaining that a high color is a fashion color such as magenta, gold, cobalt blue, bright Kelly green and primary colors.

"Think about a cape, too." she said. "People should think about buying coats as fashion investments. It's best to buy the best quality anything. I'd rather have one good quality garment rather than several less-expensive garments," Wheeler said. "And then, of course, there are.

furs. They're very glamorous. We should have at least one in our lives." Susan Scherr of The Cover Up, a shop specializing in mink and other fur coats, jackets and vests, said furs are more reasonably priced than one might ex- Kct For a couple of hundred dol-rs, a woman can walk out of her Westside shop wearing a fox jacket, for instance. "People just assume because it's fur, it's going to be expensive," she said. "Our experience is that the working woman buying her first fur will buy a blue fox (jacket) because they're $199.

That's affordable on everyone'e budget," she said. "Also, they're durable." Wheeler suggested that a person's first fur be a mink, because it's the toughest fur and it always looks beautiful. Scherr said many men come to her shop to assortment of coats available and things to consider when buying them." Wheeler said. "You have to think about proportion and lifestyle." She said when she helps a cui-, tomer find a coat to buy, she always asks, "What have you got now?" If the customer owns a nice cloth coat and raincoat, she suggests a fashion coat, perhaps, something with big shoulders in an unusual fabric like mohair. Another of Wheeler's favorites is a variation on the traditional coat updated with one of this year's fashion fabrics.

It's a navy blue, muted red and Kelly green subtle plaid mohair with patch pockets, bound buttonholes and sleeve straps. Another is a winter white coat with shag fringe on the openings of the coat and on the hood. This TexMex look is coming in for spring, Wheeler said.
