In fact Schwab, chairman of the nation's largest discount brokerage, has been happy to share what he knows. The author of two books on investing, he's just come out with a third. But this time it's about putting your money to work for a special goal. Schwab's "You're Fifty Now What? Investing for the Second Half of Your life" is aimed at helping you prime the pump for retirement. It's the latest in a bevy of books aimed at the Baby Boom generation, generally defined as those born between 1946 and 1964.

cost of commuting to a job and mamtaining a workplace wardrobe, others expenses can increase: medical care, insurance, travel, the cost of hiring people to do tasks the retiree can't do himself. "I want to see my grandkids in different parts of the country," Schwab said. "I want to give them gifts. And what about medical costs? for one, would like to have some options there. I want to be able to afford to do things." He argues against the traditional formula of investing heavily in stocks and stock mutual The oldest Boomers are approaching retirement, and many aren't sure they're ready for that milestone, either psychologically or financially.

It should be comforting to Baby Boomers that like their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents, they'll get to -and through retirement. But Schwab and other writers argue that the current generation may need different financial strategies than their forebears. funds when you're young and moving toward more conservative holdings, such as bonds, as you age. "I strongly encourage you to invest at least some portion of your money -preferably a significant portion in stocks and stock mutual funds for as long as you live," he says in his book. "In other words, never stop investing for growth." Asked how he'd invest $100,000, he said he'd put 70 percent in a mutual "I strongly encourage you to Invest at least some portion of your money -preferably a significant portion In stocks and stock mutual funds for as long as you live." Charles Schwab, discount brokerage chairman ed, analysts said.

Many on Wall Street have already factored, in another interest rate cut from the Fed, and now investors need another catalyst to set off another round of buying. Specifically, investors are worried that the economy is slowing too much, and don't know how long that trend and lower corporate profits will last. Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan's comments Thursday that economic growth had practically come to a halt added to those concerns, although he made it clear that more rate cuts are likely and that he supports tax cuts. "I think people are very concerned that we not go into a recession," said Ronald Hill, investment strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman. He said Wall Street needs to see another rate cut in addition to one expected from the Fed next week before investors can feel more confident about the economy.

The anxiety has made the market more inclined to punish than to reward, especially when it comes to technology stocks, some of which remain relatively pricey. PMC-Sierra slid $21.88, or 23 percent, to $74 Friday after the semiconductor maker lowered its 2001 outlook and several investment firms cut their ratings on the stock. Still, technology eked out a small advance, primarily due to Microsoft, which gained $2.19. to reach $64, and Intel, up $1.38 at $35.88. Both stocks are also Dow components.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by nearly 7 to 5 on the New York Stock Exchange. Consolidated volume came to 1.32 billion shares, compared with 1.51 billion Thursday. The Russell 2000 index was off 0.32 at 498.68, but still rose 10.59 or 2.2 percent for the week. NEW YORK (AP) Pessimism about the economy and corporate profits reasserted itself on Wall Street Friday, sending blue chip stocks lower and limiting technology stock gains. Even the expectation that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates again next week failed to cheer investors, who remain in a holding pattern, unsure of what to do next.

"Investors are not going to put a lot into the market until they figure out where the economy is headed and how bad earnings will be for the first half of this year," said Jim Weiss, chief investment officer at State Street Research and Management. "It looks like interest rate cuts and maybe tax cuts are coming, but those things won't impact the economy immediately." The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 69.54 at 10,659.98, up 72.39 or 0.7 percent for the week. The Nasdaq composite index advanced a modest 27.02 to 2,781.30, a weekly gain of 10.92 or 0.4 percent. The broader Standard Poor's 500 index fell 2.56 to 1,354.95, but ended the week 12.41, or 0.9 percent, higher. Health care issues were stronger, led by Dow component Merck, which rose 38 cents to $82.25.

But the gain wasn't enough to offset losses in the Dow's manufacturing and industrial stocks, including Boeing, off $1.19 at $58.06, and DuPont, down $1.06 at $40.94. Honeywell fell 88 cents to $46.44 after missing quarterly earnings estimates by a penny. The company blamed the loss on expenses related to its pending merger with General Electric. Investors had become more upbeat over the past few weeks, but the market's weakness in recent days reflects uncertainty about where the economy is head Cleaning brands sold CINCINNATI Procter Gamble Co. will sell the Spic and Span and Cinch cleaning brands as part of an effort to focus on bigger brands.

The cleaning products except for Professional Line Spic and Span are going to The Spic and Span which was formed by the Shansby Group, a San Francisco-based private equity partnership. Terms were not disclosed. Spic and Span, an all-purpose cleaning product, was invented in the 1930s and acquired by in 1945. Cinch, a glass and hard-surface cleaning product, was marketed in 1991 as a line extension of Spic and Span. In July, Procter Gamble sold its oldest laundry detergent brand, Oxydol, which wat, introduced in 1927.

Judge reduces award INDIANAPOLIS A federal judge has ordered the Internet shopping service mySimon.com to stop using the name "Simon" but reduced a $26.8 million trademark-infringement verdict against the company to $50,000. U.S. District Judge David Hamilton upheld a jury's finding last August that mySimon.com violated the trademark of Simon Property Group, the nation's largest shopping mall company. Hamilton set aside all but $50,000 of the total verdict, saying that $5.3 million awarded to Simon Property for advertising to correct confusion among consumers was arbitrary and not supported by the evidence. The judge also set aside $10 million in punitive damages because state law sets a.

maximum of $50,000, and $11.5 million was tossed out because that amount was based on profits the Internet company has yet to generate. The case involved competition between an e-business and traditional retailing. AirTran begins flights "GULFPORT, Miss. AirTran Airways will begin making flights to Charlotte, N.C., and four other cities by mid-April. The flight additions are the result of negotiations between Casino Air Link, Beau Rivage and Grand Casinos, said Steve Schoen of Casino Air Link, a Clearwater, tour company that works with AirTran.

The cities will be added weekly to AirTran's schedule, beginning in March. AirTran has six daily flights between Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport and Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Houston, Dallas and Atlanta. Soybean prices dip CHICAGO Corn futures plunged to a four-month low Friday on the Chicago Board of Trade on increased pessimism about the prospects for U.S. exports. Other grains and soybeans also fell.

Corn prices initially sank in sympathy with a decline in wheat. The slide then accelerated on uncertainty about how the mad cow concerns that emerged Thursday in Texas would affect animal feed demand. Favorable weather in South America also contributed to the nearly 2 percent drop in corn prices. Wheat for March delivery fell 2 cents to a bushel; March corn fell 334 cents to $2.0912 a bushel; March oats fell IV cent to $1.0314 a bushel; March soybeans fell 534 cents to a bushel. Compiled from Advocate Wire Reports "People are living longer, they're healthier and they're more active," Schwab said in a recent interview.

"In addition, they're probably going to get less help from the government. That means they have to rely more on themselves." Schwab who is 63 and says he isn't thinking yet of retiring sees his book as a guidepost for retirement savings and spending. His biggest concerns are that Americans are underestimating how much money they will need in retirement and that they may not be investing aggressively enough to ensure that their savings last as long as they do. The rule of thumb has been that you need 70 percent to 80 percent of preretirement fund linked to the Schwab 1000 stock index or Standard Poor's 500 index, 20 percent in an international indexed stock fund, 5 percent in a bond fund and 5 percent in a money market fund. And it's preferable to invest in a tax-deferred account such as a 401 (k) retirement plan.

As Schwab sees it, "the far greater risk is investing too conservatively and outliving your money." Perhaps the scariest part of his book is his bottom line. By his calculations, if you want to withdraw $1,000 each month from your savings during retirement, you should have at least $230,000 invested. If you want $2,000, you'll need to think about doubling that nest egg. At that withdrawal rate, he says, your principal will outlast your needs. What if you don't have that kind of money? "Get started and work with what you have," Schwab says.

"This is a place where income to live on after you retire. "I really think it should be higher much higher," Schwab says. He argues that while retirees see some day-to-day expenses decline, such as the every little bit counts."
