New 'Short Takeoff Plane Traces Origin to Bay State known as the Helio Courier. The pioneers in this development were Dr. Lynn L. Bollinger, then professor in charge of the aviation research department at the Harvard Business School and Otto Koppen, then head of the aeronautical research department at M.I.T.

By ARTHUR A. RILEY In 1954, two Bay State professors were awarded a certificate of airworthiness by the then Civil Aeronautics Administration for a "brain child" in the form of light STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft Built under rather humble manufacturing facilites at Canton Airport, the craft made a press demonstration in the Fall of that year at Tech field where it virtually flew through the goal posts. Later, the Helio Aircraft company moved its manufacturing center to Pittsburgh, Kan. Design, engineering and general headquarters are maintained at Hanscom Field, Bedford. SLOW START Reception of this type of aircraft was slow until the outbreak of hostilities in Vietnam.

Many are in service in this theater of operations where they have proved their worth. During the years, the craft has JORDAN MARSH -Aw BV StA 5 fix If js jA? i PLANE TALK found markets in various parts of the world in civilian activities. But now, with increased air congestion at major airports, the STOL type of aircraft may become a source of relief, because of its unique flexibility on shorter runways, utilization of closer-in airports, and lower altitudes of airspace. Dr. Bollinger, now board chairman of the Helio Aircraft Corporation, and also president of General Aircraft Corp.

of El Segundo, has announced plans in conjunction with Pacific Airmotive a production affiliate of Burbank, for the building of a 32-t o-36-p a nger STOL craft, PLANE'S PURPOSE The airplane is designed primarily to serve communities too small for modern jets, and with a definite eye for use on high-density routes such as the Boston-New York-Washington run, the Northeast Corridor. The craft, to be known as the GAC-100, will be of an advanced four-engine design powered by Pratt Whit-new PT6A turbines on a low-wing prop-jet, transport-type configuration with a cruise speed of 325 m.p.h. It is expected to be the first production transport-type STOL to exceed the r-200 m.p.h. peed range of older STOL types. Bollinger described it as the first STOL airplane offering full airline quality and comfort.

It will have fully pressurized and air-conditioned cabin, lavatory, galley and other conveniences. The craft's speed will exceed by 75 m.p.h., the Breuget-built McDonnell-Douglas 188 STOL craft scheduled to undergo experimental tests on routes of Eastern Airlines starting Sept. 17.
