60c 60e 60c stance Into lead and acid. This may be accomplished by strictly observing the normal discharge rate of the battery as placed on It by the manufacturer. The discharge rate is always stated in amperes, and is usually marked on the battery. If not marked on the battery, this Information may be obtained froui the manufacturer or the distributor. It is important to know, as It serves as a sort of health gu.de to long life and satisfactory service for the battery.

If the normal discharge rate is five amperes it ndicates that a currtnt greater than five amperes should never be drawn lrom the batteryt and also that the" charging rate of the battery should not exceed five amperes. The reasons for observing the manufacturer's rating are as follows: Charging or discharging the battery at an excessive rate, or allowing it to remain in a discharged condition, fosters the growth of lead sulphate crystals on the plates. In time the accumulation of those crvstals sets up stresses, which tend to buckle the plates and crowd out their active material. Since the capacity of a storage battery-is dependent upon the surface of active material exposed to the action of the electrolyte, as this proceas (known as sulphatin) progresses, the capacity continues to decrease, necessitating charging of the battery at frequent intervals and finally resulting in its destruction. The capacity of a storage battery is rated in ampere-hours, thus: 6-volt 40-ampere-hours, 6-volt 60-ampere-hours, etc.

It means that a 40-ampere-hour battery is capable of delivering 1 ampere for 40 hours, 2 amperes for 20 hours. 4 amperes for 10 hours, etc, up to the normal discharge rate of the battery: and that if the sgm. battery is charged by a current of 1 ampere it will require 40 hours to fully charge it. 2 amperes 20 hours and 4 amperes 10 hours. The voltage of a fully charged 3-cell lead plate battery is 6.3 volts, but it is usually spoken of as a 6-volt battery.

This tvne of battery is used to lisht the Called His Audience by States The farmer, in hiB country home, may listen to entertainments given in a distant city as well as the cosmopolite in his plush chair in the auditorium. A short time ago Hiram Percy Maxim spoke to the radio amateurs of Indiana, Ohio. West Virginia, Maryland, District of Columbia, Delaware. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New Y'ork. Khode Island, "Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, the Province of Quobec and to the ships off the Atlantic coast.

Actually, he made an address to the radio amateurs of that vast territory. Amateurs in all parts of that district heard him. It was the first time in the history of the world where a man actually called his audience by States, instead of by may be as Strang as they were weak davs or so ago, for stocks of old cabbage are well cleaned up. Green string beans are cheaper, not much because of a material increase in offerings as the poor quality of same. Encouraged by the recovery in prices a week ago, cucumber growers shipped more lreeiy, and as a result the maiaet is down where it was before, and barelj steady.

Spinach is easier, wholesale firms tinding it necessary to moderate values to move stock. in larger supplv, not always easy move and really OUOted at bargain prices, as vegetable prices go today. A freer movement of California, and a resumption of Florida shipments, forced native lettuce prices off somewhat. Massachusetts grown onions likewise are meeting competition from stock produced ontHfle the State, liberal supplies of Western being offered for less money. Then, too, Bermuda and Spanish onions ci.eu arc-taken In preference to Connecticut Valley and York State, because ot quality, size and price.

Peppers have been less plentiful. Is it not the other way? Answer No.

it is not the other way. The plus terminal of the charging generator is always connected, as stated, to tnw plus terminal of the battery. Q. 100, E. Reading, Mass I am a radio "bug" and read with interest the radio column published by you in the Boston Sunday Globe.
