12 Tuesday November 22 1988 News Record YOUNG SCENE Bishop to preside over Medallion Ball Bishop Donald Wuerl will preside at the annual Medallion Ball sponsored by St Lucy's Auxiliary to the Blind Nov 25 at the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel St Lucy Auxiliary is active throughout the six-county area and has raised more than SvSWXXkfbr the Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind The 86 young laches to be presented at this year ball will be given Joan of Arc medallions in recognition of their multiple hours Of volunteer service to hospitals institutions and charitable organizations Their combined hours this year totaled more than 23.000 Heather Cnsten Gentile, a senior at Vincentian High School, has par- ticpated in student council, the service club, field hockey, the yearbook staff, chorus the prom com- mitte and has been a homeroom representative She is a member of St Catherine's parish and has done her volunteer service at North Hills Passavant Hospital Lynn Anne Palumbo, a senior at Vincentian High School, is an editor-in-chief of the yearbook a homeroom representative a basketball manager, a member of the National Honor Society and the service club Also, she was involved in intramural sports and is a member of St Joseph Parish She has done Ptwte lubmititd Bishop Donald Wuerl of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh with, from left: Heather Cnsten Gentile, Lynn Anne Palumbo, Janice Marlene Neely and Pamela Lynn Ceponis volunteer work at John Kane Ross Regional Center Janice Marlene Neely a senior at Shaler Area High School, participates basketball and volleyball She is a member of the St Aloysius Church and has done her volunteer service for Reserve Township and the church youth group Pamela Lynn Ceponis, a senior at Fox Chapel High School is a member of the basketball team She is a member of St Mary's parish and the youth group, and has done her volunteer service for St Margaret's Hospital, North Hills Passavant Hospital and St Mary's Church COLLEGES Robin Jonas and Beth Ann Rausch are two of 10 Clarion Uni versity of Pennsylvania students recently named Alumni Association Scholarship winners for 198889 $300 a i a awarded of grade point average and financial need The student also writes a paragraph indicating why he has applied for the scholarship Jonas the daughter of Donald and Joyce Jonas of is a senior accounting major with a 4 0 QPA in her major and a 3 8 overall She is a graduate of Shaler High School Beth Rausch Robin Jonas overall ol North Mr Hills High School Glenn Richard son of gheny College in Meadville Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious honorary fraternity in the nation Members are chosen on the basis of outstanding academic achievements and strong moral character The breadth of a student's academic program, as i by the of courses taken outside the student's major, is also a factor election Campbell was honored earlier this fall as an Alden Scholar, a Doane Scholar and an Allegheny Scholar He received the William Edgar Porter Prize, which is given annually to the student with the highest scholastic average during PIOPLI Science honors Two hundred ninety seniors from 64 Pittsburgh area schools were se lected to attend the 32nd annual Westinghouse Science Honors In stitute this year at the Westing house RD Center in Churchill Schools from as far as Beaver and Ligomer are represented Nominations were up 15 percent -from tot year while the proportion of students remained at about the 40 percent level reached several years ago Students in the program meet with working scientists from Westinghouse and local universities, many of them are experts in their fields All public, private and parochial schools within commuting distance of the Westinghouse RD Center are invited to nominate as many candidates as appear to be qualified The school's nominees then are screened on the basis of grades, teacher recommendations and their answers to a short essay question The institute draws lecturers primarily from Westinghouse as well as from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon Uni versity The two top scores in a written exam given at the end of the program have been offered work as interns at the Westinghouse Center during the summer following their high school graduation The following recepients from the North Hills area are Allegheny a A worth's Dale Peters, Kevin Reilly, Deer Lake's John Robinson, and Fox Chapel's Joseph McCarthy, Rachel Atkins, Gerard Ro-wles, i Carson, Tina Beachy David Pennoch. David Troup and Kim Bolivar of Pme-Richland School were recognized by The North Hills Chamber of Commerce at the Highland Country Club Both received a "Business Student Recognition Certificate" for their mteresTsTand accomplishments in the field of business Nance Morris of Wexford was among 500 students participating in Challenge '89, a liberal arts and science career Morns is a senior at Randolph- Macon Woman's College and the daughter of Mr and Mrs Raymond Morns The sixth annual Challenge program took place Nov 9-10 at the Radisson Hotel, Lynchburg, Virginia Morns is a graduate of Richland High School EVINT8 Jump rope Pupils from St Mary's School, Middle Road, will participate in Jump Rope for Heart on Nov 23 from 9 to 11 a The two-hour event is sponsored by the A i a A i a for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and local physi cal education teachers to benefit the American Heart Association i i a a i a friends to sponsor them for every minute their team jumps in the event.
