She was 64.

O'Day, who died Saturday, was once called one of "the greatest, if not the greatest, woman singer in country music," by Robert Shelton, former country and folk music critic for The New York Times. Dolly Parton once said O'Day's music profoundly influenced the way she sings. The most famous of all bluegrass banjo players, Earl Scruggs, said that she once beat him in a banjo contest in Renfro Valley, and admitted he stood in awe of her singing and banjo-picking talents. But during her years in Huntington, she refused to accept the accolades from an admiring public, remaining nearly a recluse at her home and insisting that her career had no impact on modern country music. Born as La Verne Williamson in McVeigh, on July 9, 1923, she came from the same eastern Kentucky hills that nurtured other country music greats such as Lor-etta Lynn and Ricky Skaggs.

O'Day recorded 36 songs between 1946 and 1951, including her most famous, a late 1946 recording of "The Tramp on the Street." Among her other recordings were "Teardrops Falling in the Snow," "Don't Sell Daddy Any More Whiskey," and the Hank Williams creation, "The Singing Waterfall." She ended her career when she and her husband, Lynn Davis, dedicated themselves to working for the Church of God on a full-time basis. A serious lung ailment in 1952 and 1953 prevented her from singing more than a few minutes at a time. O'Day is survived by her husband. I. Gilbert, fri I OH, MY ACHING BACK If Dennis C. Brown Director NO HIDDEN COSTS If you're like a lot of people, you may have occasional or persistent back pain and wonder what caused it. You try to think of some incident in which you may have strained your back and come up with nothing. But there must be some reason why you have back pains.

The truth is that even the simplest of incidents may be the cause, such as reaching high on a shelf to set something. Or stooDing sud denly to pick up something that has fallen. Or maybe you need some tips on good posture. Whatever the cause, the pro blem may be that your spinal column is out of alignment No pain-killing drug can cure the cause. It can dull the pain for All of us have had the experience of opening a bill and being staggered by the amount.

This is often because what we THOUGHT we were paying has been considerably augmented by "hidden costs," taxes, service charges, surcharges, interest charges, etc. The great majority of funeral directors adhere to a professional code of ethics which includes provisions for seeing that this doesn happen. In order to eliminate those hidden costs, you will find that these funeral directors are explicit about the costs of goods and services. In addition, once the family decides on the kind of service desired, the funeral director should provide a written document for the family to review and approve. This should include a description of the service and the price.

Any supplemental charges should be listed It should also make mention of any sums which the funeral director will advance on behalf of the family, e.g. newspaper notice. LINN FUNERAL HOME 807 Main St. Benton, Ky. r527-3202 Tbt Wrndow Factory Precision Wurrh't Pharmocy 1207 fcwgh.
