LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Our Many and loud are the complaints of the pedestrians on and streets that the merchants use the entire sidewalk for making a display of their goods and wares. In fact on street there are some two or three stores that vie the entire sidewalk with the exception of about threa feet in the center. They place much of their stock in trade on the sidewalk io the morning, and take it back in the store ro im in the evening. Some music-dealers leave their empty piano boxes on the walks for months at a time.

Some grocers almost cover them up with codfish and potatoes. This is all wrong, and is a great inconvenience to the public. attention of those merchants, also that of the police force, is called to Section 3 of Chapter 8 of the ordinances of this city, which reads as follows "No person it business firm shall use any portion of the sidewalk in any part of the city fur any purpose whatever, excepting only for the display of goods, wares and merchandise, and fcr the purpose of displaying goods, only four feet in width, commencing at the front line of the lot provided, however, that merchants and others receiving and delivering goods shall be allowed six hours from the time tluy are deposited until they are removed and, provided further, that a space cf six feet in width shall at all times be kept clear for the accommodation of persons pafsitig. Any person violating this ordinance, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by imprisonment in the city ii! not exceeding ten days, or by fine not exceeding .8500, or by both lice end imprisonment." Wab Against Insect ln May, 1881, the apple orchard at the Navato ranch, Marin county, was infested by a species of tent caterpillar C'lisiocampa cotutricta. Ia order to save p.irt of the crop, it cost Mr.

De Long 81,800, The number of caterpillars destroyed was immerse, and the crop saved brought nearly 830,000. During the last two months aging men have been employed picking tha lings of eggs deposited by the moths last fall iff the trees, Mr. De Long forwardsd to Matthew Cooke a package containing one-fourth of the eggs collected to the 18th iust; they weigh thirty-five ounces avorduDois, and cost to gather 554. Probably about three pounds more will be gathered. Mr.

Cooke has the specimens Bent him in six sealed bottles, reserved in alcohol, It takes an average of COO rings of eggs to one ounce, each ring contains from 200 to 400 eggs, showing that the work done in this manner by Mr. De Ling will be equal to the destruction of about 60,000,000 of caterpillars. Mr. Cooke says there is no doubt of Mr. De Long being master of the situation, so far as this pest is concerned.

The specimens can be seen at the office of Mr. Cooke, and are worthy of the attention of fruit-growers. Another proof that perseverance will gain the victory. The department responded with its usual promptness and the fire was soon extinguished with a very slight loss. The fire occurred in a China Joes house, the property cf J. D. Tate, Second and I streets, and originated in tha upper story of the building. The loss is some 6230, and is covered by insurance in the Union Company of San Francisco, of which Cadwalader of this city, are agents.

The above is a full, complete and truthful statement of the entire affair. Our evening contemporary, however, gave a very different statement. It said, An alarm was sounded from box 22." There is no box 22, It was the alarm from the Water Works. It stated that "the fire originated in the basement," The fire originated in the upper story. It said, "No.

1 was slow in reaching the scene." No. 1 was playing a stream on the fire in just three minutes after the first alar and made the run just two minutes and a half. Henry Guthrie, foreman of No. 1, ia a card, says I desire to state to the public that steamer and iiose-ca-t No. 1 responded as promply to the fire alarm yesterday as they have ever to any call, the statement made in last evening's Bee; but it must be remembered that 111 a run of two blocks steam cai not be got in sufficient quantity to work the steamer.

But ii got to work in a very bhort space of time, and in the meantime the stream taken from the plug was sultijient, the best evidence if this, ani that good work was done, being that the fire was confined to the room where it originated. It stated that the "Hayes truck did not respond promptly, and thit when it did arrive ths many men who rode down on its side-planks did but little good, comparatively. There was an incessant hrllabaloo all the while the fire was in progiera, aid it was generally asserted that the department proved itself on this occasion to be thoroughly incompetent." One of the heaviest underwriters in this city was present during the entire fire, and states that this assertion is entirely untrue. The Hayes truck arrived at the fire in exactly three and a half minutes, and went quietly to work. There was no noise or unusual hooting, but, on the contrary, it was one of the quietest and best-managed fires he had ever witnessed.

The paper was not satisfied with condemning the firemen, engines and hos but also attacked tbe horse of hose-cart No. 1. Tha horse ii a new one, a little green, but is considered by all competent judges to be the best animal in the department. It also gees further, and insinuates that Engine No. 2 was at the tima the alarm was given at Brighton or some other remote point in the county, and that when it reached the scene of the fire it was too late to be of service, and that the horses were in a "forlorn condition." Tne boys of No.

2 deny the accusation in toto. They state that they were at their enginehouse on Tenth street when the alarm was sounded, promptly responded, and reached the fire as soon as could be expected by any reasonable person, taking the distance they had to travel nine into consideration. It must be said the present fire department that it is well and ably The Fire Commissioners are ill gentlemen who in every sense of the wild are representative citizens. In -electing those composing the Paid Fire Department they have used commendable judgment, and to-day the Paid Fire Dfpartment of Sacramento city, from the Chief down to the humblest is equal to any, if not the best in the unlry. These commendations of the firemen of Sacramento are not in the line of flattery.

Toey are simply statements of fact, and it ia but just to the department that they be made unmistakably plain. These men risk their lives, for small recompense, in protecting the lives and property of others, and all unprejudiced citizens are ccg leant of the promptness and efficiency cf the department, which misrepresentation and captious criticism will cot tend to increase. The department has been made the subject of unwarranted attacks from the quarter indicated ever since the unfortunate death cf Frank Ruhstaller's children, who perished in the flames last summer, when the firemen were indirectly charged by the same authority with lack of energy in attempting their rescue. Land Patents. Register Taylor reports that the following patents for agricultural lands were received at the United States Land Office in this city yestetday, and that parties holding the duplicate receipts therefore will, upon the delivery of the same, receive their patents, to wit John C.

11. Metropolitan Leavitt's Gigantean Minstrels had a crowded house last night. They gave a thoroughly good pcrf one of the best variety minstrel entertainments that has been presented to this public. The especially attractive feat ures were, the thirty minstrels on the stage the very fine orchestra the tmi-ical imitations by P. C.

Shortis the comical acrobatic exercitesof Conners and Kelly the admirable female impersonations by Burton Stanley; the "Three Musical Rankins," known here; tha wonderful imitations of birds and tine whistling and ventriloquist elfrcts by Sloman and the very amu-ing and well acted burlerqne on the comic open "La Mascotte." The leading vocalists are good, and are Sinclair, Lament. Kellogg and Tyiell The introduction cf harp, cornet, trombone and violin in obligate) during the first part was an especially pleasing feature. The whole entertainment is as good as any lover of modern negro minstrelsy ought to defire, and the audience last night gave unmistakable evidences of its satisfaction. The one fault to be found with it is the questionable taste of so much reference by the twelve end men to terms that refer to their knowledge of and the supposed famil- i iarity of their auditors with gambling games. A little less of this is desirable.

There are few if any of our readers who do not know Mr. Henry F. Merritt, of the Board of Public Works. There are not many better known men in the city of Chicago but what is more to the point is that Mr. Merritt is not only well but favorably known.

Since Mr. Merritt first entered upon his career as a public man he has had countless friends acd enemies a fact that speaks volumes for that gentleman. He has always proven himself the soul of honor, whether in political or other matters wherein he has had dealings with the public. We now wish to Bay that Mr. Merritt was never known to be behind the limes, but on the contrary he has always been in the lead in matters wherein the public good is concerned.

Speaking of the public good, Mr. M. is a gentleman who decidedly possesses the knowledge of what is good far the public, and when he sees a good thing, unlike many others, he shares his knowledge with the public. An attache of this paper lately met Mr. Merritt in the city and, while discussing the wants of the people and the various remedies employed in allaying them, Mr.

M- rritt said There is one thing that strikes me as an excellent thing for the people that is St. Jacobs Oil, the Great German Remedy." That ii a medicine that will do all that is claimed for it by its proprietors, and more too, I am inclined to think. It is a medicine that possesses remarkable healing properties, and more effective in rheumatism than any other preparation for the cure of that disease that has ever been put up. "I speak thus of the Oil because I bad occasion to test its qualities and know, therefore, whereof I speak. I used St.

Jacobs Oil for the rheumatism, and it cured me. I admit that I doubted its good qualities before I used it. but Idoso no more. St. Jacobs Oil is a great remedy for the rheumatism and kindred diseases.

Most people know it, and the sooner they all find that St. Jacobs Oil is a great thing, the better it will be for them." Times. Health, hope and happiness are restored by the use of Lydia E. The men, he says, who first enticed women and children into an industrial career, and they who have in later times devised the scheme of competitive examination, have done more to enfeeble the British than can be counterbalanced by the mos perfect system of drainage an.l ventilation, with the highest personal cleanliness superadded.
