Typical English Breakfast Comedy "George and Margaret," by Gerald Savory. Produced by John C. Wilson at the Morosco Theatre, New York, Sept.

22, 1937. THE Moya Nuzeiit Mirland Arahanr Irene Hrowne M.iolm- A Ik Dudley Macrae By BURNS MANTLE. (Reprinted from yesterday's late editions) Not much sense, I admit, in classifying "George and Margaret," the new piece at the Morosco, as an English breakfast comedy. But there isn't much sense in "George in colors-appears in Ihe comic Can't Take It With You" is to New York, though much less original in thought and jest and much thinner in content than the Hart-Kaufman bit of Manhattan madness. There is no particular motivation urging on the silly folk in "George and Margaret." The dialogue is bright but a little strained.

The titular characters represent visiting bores who are threatened guests but never appear. The young sister falls in love with her brother's friend and finally forces a declaration from The older boy decides to marry the housemaid and holds to his intention through a scene of comic hysteria indulged by his mother. The father, an absent-minded but shrewd observer from the family sidelines, looks on and chuckles. Both cinema and legitimate competition demand something more than that, I'm convinced, at current tariffs. Even- at the opening of a FASTEST GIRLIE SHOW ON WAY! THE ORIGINAL! A merry and bright younger son, his dull and stodgy brother, and a sweet and sexy younger sister. Very little comes of these introductions, unhappily. It has been reported of Gerald author, that he is a bright young man 27, an actor by profession, who wrote "George and Margaret" quite casually from pencilled notes of his friends. He didn't think much of his play when he had finished it and neither did the London managers who read it.

But an independent subscription stage society put it on one Sunday night and a manager chap in the audience liked it and bought it. When it was produced professionally it scored an immediate hit and is still running London. I can understand the English success. Ho How section of the SUNDAY NEWS season for which we have been waiting long and expectantly. The playing company is English and gifted, but it was quite difficult to understand Irene Browne, playing the wife, because she was so much more interested in being comic in character than she was in being heard. Morland Graham did much better and was charmingly "mple end human as the father.

Roslyn Boulter brings a nice spirit and a fresh, youthful beauty to the sister role. The two boys are well played by Arthur (Macrae and Richard Warner. Alan Webb and Moya Nugent, two gratefully remembered members of the Noel Coward "Tonight at 8:30" players, are agreeably cast and Gladys Henson, a character comedienne of reputation at home, has a silent but hilarious bit at the play's end. Last night's welcoming audience was friendly and vastly amused, judging from the comedy's recep tion. SHUBERT En.
