Star center Alexei Yashin is expected to miss up to 12 weeks as a result of the serious cut he suffered on his right forearm in the third period of Tuesday's 4-2 home win over Philadelphia. "The reality is, the injury actually could have been worse. Still, it's a big disappointment for our team and our fans," GM Mike Milbury said.

"Alexei is one of our leaders and had been playing some of his best hockey over the last few weeks. "But throughout the history of this league, the good teams have always found a way to step up when one of their top players goes down. I know our guys will do the same." Yashin, whose arm was sliced by the skate blade of Flyers winger Michal Handzus, is the Islanders highest-paid player ($8.6 million) and their co-leading scorer this season (12-12-24), with linemate Mariusz Czerkawski. He was particularly hot during the Isles' recent 6-3-0-1 stretch, with seven goals in his last 10 appearances. The team's medical staff said Yashin suffered two partially severed extensor tendons of the wrist and a severed sensory nerve.

He had surgery performed by the team orthopedist. Dr. Kenneth Montgomery at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan after after the game. His rehabilitation will begin when his cast is removed in four weeks. Team physician Elliot Pellman said the injury is not career-threatening and Yashin is expected to make a complete recovery.

Still, No. 79 might not be able to return to the lineup until just before the playoffs if the .500 Isles (15-15-2-1) qualify without him. They entered the Christmas break one point out of the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference with 49 games left, beginning with back-to-back contests against New Jersey (tomorrow) and Toronto (Saturday).
