THE MORNING POST, THURSDAY, JULY 17, 1884. LAW INTELLIGENCE. THE MARKETS. Yesterday. NEW NOVEL BY JOHN Bt FOTHERGILL.

Now read v. at aU the Libraries, in 3 "NAYTHORNE HAL LOXDOX. MARK-LANE. There is no new feature at Mark -lane. Business is very quiet.

Fresh supplies of grain are short. Wheat, botli English and foreign, is steady in value, hut the demand is quiet, i-'iour is dull, at about late rates. Barley is steady, on former terms. Oats and maize are much about the same in value, with a quiet demand. Beans and peas have sold at late rates.

Arrivals of grain English and botch: Wheat, 210; mait, l.oOoqr. Foreign Wheat, 27,5:0 barley, oats, la.l-o; maize, i'Mr. hour, lT.riW sacks; 7i0 IJOi'S. Messrs. W.

IT. and H. Le Mav report The market remains steady, with a small consumptive trade doing, hut if any tiling is pressed for sale lower prices have to be sub-I niited to. Fiaatation reports received this morning on the whole are not so favourable. The East Kent grounds that have heen fairly clean are now in a very critical state.

Vermin is increasing fast in the grounds between Canterbury, Petham, aud Chatham. We also get worse reports from Fltiiam and Water-inghury. The reports from the Weald were slightly better, so far that the bulk of the vermin is dead, but most pi the un-I washed hops are so bare of bine, not half un the pole, that it would not be possible to produce lewt. per acre. The washed mc inn aruuuK uui Hell, auu will ue Yerj BUgut croppeis.

The country Farnham districts of Alton, Selborne, and Bentley are iu a black blight, and goin decidedly worse the last two days. The I crounds are also "ainz black. We should reduce our estimate to-day to 140,000 old duty. Letters received from American growers speak of one-third to one-half clop only being grown. The imports of foreign hops into England last week were Zjz bales for the corresponding week last year, nil The total imports ol foreign hops into England from October 1, to July 12, 18S4, were 91,312 bales for the corresponding period last year, bales, Current prices: East Rents, iS 15s.

A train was at that time shunting at a rapid rate, aiid iu consequence, if the engine had crossed the points, it would have rushed into Messrs. Wilmot Holland in the chair. Mr. J. P. Sidpp (the secretary) read the notice convening the meeting and the report of the directors and statement of accounts, which appeared in our City article, were taken as read.

The chairman said that it was a source of great pleasure to the directors to be able to report that the bank still continued to make satisfactory progress, which was shown by the fact that there was an increase in the deposit and current accounts as comtiared with this tune last year, and also that the result of the past six months' working showed a substantial number of current accounts. Another matter he was able to report to them, which gave the directors equal pleasure, was the smalluess of the amount of bad debts made during the past half year. Turning to the profit aud loss account he need hardly remind the shareholders that the value of money had ruled exceedingly low during the past half-yet r. The Bank of England rate had been lower than it had been for some years. During the past six months it had only averaged i'J lfls.

Gd. per while during the whole of last year it was L3 lis. aud even at the low rati current the managers had at times found it ditticult to lend money at all in legitimate banking fields or channels. Notwithstanding this he was glad to he able to remind thorn that the bank had earned in the six months a net profit of 242,905, which would enable them to declare a dividend of 8 per cent, for the half-year, and carry forward a sum of 18,905, to next account. He might take this opportunity of mentioning that the sum of their earniugs had been somewhat augmented by the commission earned ou the Cape of Good Hope Loan, which was raised by thin batik last year.

The bank was, as they knew, established in and they had therefore now passed their jubilee. At the last meeting a wish was expressed that the celei ration the jubilee might I be felt inasubstantialraarnerbytlieoffic-irs of the hank. The I directors after going carefully into the matter had decided upon presenting each manager and oflicer iu the hank with a sum e.pjal to 10 per ceut. on the salaries they were receiving, which he hoped would meet with the approval of the shareholders. They had had two vacancies on the board, and they bad nominated two gentlemen, Mr.

Johnston and Mr. Sturgis, names well known iu the City, and their nomination would be proposed for confirmation at the next general meeting. He moved that the report be adopted, printed, and circulated among the proprietors. Mr. Thomas Chapman seconded the motion.

In leply to a shareholder the chairman stated that the gratuity would he paid out of the promts of the current half year. Themotionfortheadoptionof the report I was then put andcarried unanimously. Dr. Drysuale moved that the best thanks of the meeting be present to the directors for their efficient administration of the aliairs of the bank during the past half year, and the motion was seconded by a shareholder aud carried unanimously. The chairman returned thanks on behalf of himself and his colleagues, and proposed that the thanks of the meeting be presented to the officers of the hank for Ihetr zealous and ai'le services duriusr the past half year.

The motion wa9 seconded by Mr. Hewitt, and carried unanimously. Mr. Astle, the chief manager, replied on behalf of himself and sta'f, after which a vote of thanks to the chairman for his conduct iu the chair terminated the proceedings. 1'sioN Bank of London.

The annual general meeting I of the proprietors of this bank was held yesterday at the i Cannon-street Hotel Mr. T. Ii. Grant, governor, presiding. The chairman having declared a dividend for the past half year at the rate of lo per cent, per annum moved the I adoption of the report.

He said the past six months had I not been a very favourable time for bankers. The first portion of the period had been fairly profital le, with the Lank rate at only 3 per but fince June it had only been 2 per at which point it remained. According to the present showing of the result of working the old rate of dividend was very nearly reached, and with the amount brought forward they were able to declare the same return, and carry forward about 1,003 to the next; account. True, there was not a large margin left alter this had been done, but it was, at least, a fairly -earned profit. He should be h-itipy if they were able to do as well in the present half year, the prospects of hich were not cheering at present.

The condition of trade was now such that any change could haidly be but for the better. The directors had had before them for some time a scheme for the alteration of the bank premises in Mansion House-street in connection with the widening of the street. The result of the negotiations was a satisfactory arrangement by which they agreed to sell a portion of the ground and acquire the freehold of premises adjoining Princes street, the effect being to give them a line of frontage which when complete would give them probably the finest bank site in the city of London. The cost of the alteration was moderate, and would no doubt result in an increase of business. Sir Sydney H.

Waterlow, M.P. (deputy governor), seconded the adoption of the report, which wasagreed to. Votes of thanks to the directors aud stall' terminated the proceedings. National DisrorNi. The half-yearly meeting of this company was held at the City Terminus Hotel yesterday Mr.

W. J. Thompson in the chair. The chairman dealt at length with the history of the money market during the past six months, which, he said, might be described as one of constant surprises and semi-panics. The volume of their business had, however, slightly increased, the bad debts had been moderate, and had been amply provided for.

In conclusion he thought that the present condition of money could not continue for ever, and there were hidden causes at work that might create a change before very long. The report was adopted, and a dividend at the rata of 13 per cent, per annum declared. The New Assize Regulations. Mr. Justice Lopes opened the commission for the Nottingham Assizes yesterday, and ordered the proclamation against vice and immorality to be read in the usual way, contrary to the new assize regulations. His lordship expressed his fear that the new scheme would not work well, and said that he was unwilling to see any forms and ceremonies discon-1 tinued which tended to clothe justice with solemnity. Water Companies' Charges.

Yesterday after-j noon, at Clerkenweil County-court, Mr. A. S. Eddis, Q.C., had before him a case in which John Charles Haines, 190, Holloway-road, sued the governors of the New River Water Company for a sum of 4 14s. amount over-, charged on water supplied.

Mr, Poland was counsel for the I company. Plaintiff said he had been a customer of the Xf-. a Juo company for the past nine years, during a greater portion 01 wnicn iime ne naa paiu to js. per annum. Having made application iur a reuuction me raie was eventuauv nxea as 1 za.

tie claimed the above amount only because of the statute of limitations, urging that there was a practical admission by the company, and added, in answer to the judge, that if lie appeared before the wrong tribunal he would go to the magistrates. Mr. Poland said that before the Dobbs case was settle 1 the rates were based upon the gross annual value aud when it was decided it was fouud that in some cases the customers had been overcharged and some undercharged. Tne company had not sued any persons who had not been sufficiently charged, and if such actions as the present were allowed the company would be liable to 50,000 claims. It must be taken that the plaintiff had acquiesced in the charge.
