SPORTS DAYTON DAILY NEWS 3D WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 2000 Skyhawks coach upset about being tossed PREP NOTEBOOK Coaching changes galore MacKeown was confused about why he was ejected after only one flag. Usually, two flags must be thrown for an ejection. Also, he said, the officials never told him why he was Chris telephone calls on Tuesday. The Bismarck Tribune reported Sunday that MacKeown was flagged the first time for arguing the offensive pass interference flag and was penalized again for getting in Harmon's face as officials tried to mark off the penalty. MacKeown denies being flagged the second time.

"I didn't even know I was thrown out," MacKeown said. "Tim Williams, our kicker, had to come over and tell me I was out. I don't think there were two flags. If you look at the film, the yardage doesn't add up for two penalties. I didn't see the second flag." The Tribune also reported that "Toward the end of the first quarter, the refs called a touchdown on our end for them which I really didn't think was a touchdown, but I kept my mouth shut," MacKeown said.

Then, things got worse. A Dayton receiver caught a touchdown pass on the ensuing drive, but was flagged for offensive pass interference. MacKeown went on the field to talk to the referee and the umpire, and after what MacKeown described as a short conversation, he turned to go back to his bench. Then, the line judge, Kevin Harmon, tossed a flag and MacKeown was ejected. MacKeown called IFL owner Keary Ecklund, who told Blaze General Manager Cody Schmidt to allow MacKeown back to the bench.

After another delay when the coach showed up at the bench, the referee again ordered MacKeown to leave and told police that he was not to return. Back in the locker room, MacKeown had no way to see the rest of the game. Until, that Is, Derek Wilson, who MacKeown calls the "official bus driver of the Dayton brought the coach a television so he could watch the rest of the game. He had no way of knowing that he was about to become a spectator.

Team Dayton to compete with pros Local amateur cyclists hoping for good showing in tour event By Dave Lance Dayton Daily News DAYTON Glenn Salyer would someday like to see his bicycling team loaded with professionals, but right now it doesn't have the sponsors to pay for the elite cyclists. So the newly formed Team Dayton 2003 will use a hodge-podge collection of veteran amateurs in the third-annual Pro-Am Cycling Series July 7-9 in downtown Dayton. "It wasn't hard to get them to be on the team," Salyer said. "It was hard to get them what they deserve. That takes sponsors and that takes a lot of money.

"They've actually had to foot the bill themselves." But none of the team members are complaining. Eight of the 38-member team will actually compete in the Pro-Am. The race will give them the opportunity to race against the best in the world. For the first time, the event is part of the Saturn USPro Cycling Series, the top tour in America. Pros from Team Mercury, Team Saturn and the U.S.

Postal Service will compete. More than 1,500 cyclists are expected for the Pro-Am, which begins July 7 with time trials, continues the next day with the criterium (a series of 10 races) and ends the following afternoon with road races. "I'm pretty excited," said Jason Woerl, a team member from Dayton. "It'll be a tough race for me, but I'm hoping to be in the top 30. His given name is Stanley Andrews, but there are few if any coaches in the area who would know who that is. Everyone calls him "Sarge." A retired Army master sergeant, he has helped run Colonel White's award-winning ROTC program for nine years. In that time he has also served as an assistant football coach. Andrews replaces Michael Mc-Cray who resigned last winter to move into administration after five years as the Cougars head coach. Colonel White has won the last two City League football titles.

Xenia has chosen Robert Rose as its new boys high school basketball coach. He replaces Tony Ricciu-to, who resigned in April. TEAM DAYTON RACING TEAM members (left to right) Jason Woerl, Scott Kammer and Wally Tate turn onto the Second course of the Pro-Am Cycling event in Dayton July 7-9. MacKeown flagged by Harmon, in conversations both at the time of the ejection and after the game.

Officials at the Indoor Football League offices did not return several Dayton some visibility in the world of cycling and to build on our bicycling history," Salyer said. It was enough to convince Wally Tate to move back to Dayton from Colorado for the spring and summer, so he could ride his bike for the team. Never mind that he doesn't have a car and lives with friends. "If my girlfriend and I have kids and we get married, it's going to be time to get a real job," Tate said. Monday's coverage, from noon to 6:30 p.m., drew a 0.9 cable rating on TNT, up from the network's usual average of 0.7, Turner Broadcasting spokesman Greg Hughes said Tuesday. Last year's coverage, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., got a 1.5 cable rating among those homes that receive HBO, which translates to about 340,000 households. Both TNT and HBO are subsidiaries of Time Warner Inc. TNT is basic cable on most systems while HBO is a premium channel, so many more homes receive TNT than HBO.

TNT's coverage Monday included the final two sets of Anna Kourniko-va's 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 upset of No. 10 San-drine Testud and Vince Spadea's 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-7 (8), 9-7 victory over Greg Rusedski, which stopped the longest losing streak in tennis history at 21 matches. SAMPRAS IS OTHERWISE ENGAGED AT WIMBLEDON Pete Sampras has a Centre Court rival actressfiancee Bridgette Wilson. The blond Californian was more photographed than Sampras as she sat at Centre Court watching the six-time champion's opening-round victory Monday over Jiri Vanek. Sampras said he and Wilson became engaged after he was upset in the first round of the French Open. 77 A have a real job. The team was formed last year and given the "2003" was added to the name to draw attention to the year that marks Ohio's bicentennial and celebrates the anniversary of the discovery of powered flight. Ferreira and Godwin, who won their first-round matches Tuesday, applauded Alex Corretja, Albert Costa and Juan Carlos Ferrero for taking a stand. Corretja and Costa withdrew from the tournament on Sunday, upset they were not seeded in the top 16, despite ATP Tour rankings in the top 16.

Ferrero, also ranked in the top 16, withdrew with a reported injury after not being seeded. Wimbledon seeds players according to their ability on grass. But Wimbledon chairman Tim Phillips on Sunday agreed the All England Club may change its system next year and, apparently embarrassed by the protest, waived fines against the Spaniards. "Despite what they may say, these guys are in essence crooking the draw," Ferreira said. Ferreira pointed out the advantage players like Tim Henman and Richard Krajicek have by being seeded despite ATP Tour rankings lower than 16.

"Even the way they have done it stinks," Ferreira said. "They have put (Greg) Rusedski at 14 so he won't have to play Sampras or (Andre) Agassi in the round of 16, and Hen-man at eight so he won't meet them until the quarterfinals at least. They can argue what they like. That's rigging the draw." Rusedski was ousted in the first round Monday by American Vince Spadea. Godwin pointed out that American Todd Martin didn't get a seed despite being ranked higher than Krajicek, Rafter or Rusedski.
