(UPI) A unique educational television program in Alabama is expected to help college-bound high school students meet the demands of university-level English courses. The series, "Two is presented by Auburn University to PARKING Dries in less than one hour leaves no lap marks Satin-like finish Wythe Jefferson Sts. RE 2-5618 assist the high school student with an English language or composition deficiency. Already it has attracted 497 high school students.

Four high English teachers and three housewives also have enrolled for the four- a-week instruction periods. Richard Siefferson, producer and director said the idea for the show resulted from last November's American College Tests. The tests showed a number of Alabama high school seniors needed additional instruction in English in order to successfully complete a college-level English course. The results showed that some of the students would not he able to enter college because of their deficiencies in English, white many more would find it necessary to take remedial English courses to learn whut they should have learned in high school. Alarmed at the low scores, the university wrote a number of students suggesting they take steps to increase their proficiency in English, and adding that the course was designed to do just that.

The youths were told: "Students who successfully pass the final examination and later enroll at Auburn University i eligible for the regular college English course. If you attend another institution, your chances of placement in a regular English course and of passing it will likely be increased." Students responding to the letter represented 213 high schools in the 55-county area served by the state educational television network. The course consists of lectures and instruction formums four times a week. In addition, there are five essays to be sent to Auburn for grading and counseling. Dr.

ing about city traffic to the non- city driver? "Chiefly--more traffic," is the answer given by the National Safety Council. The Council listed other causes of driver confusion in city traffic: Hundred of signs here, there and everywhere: Do Not Enter, One Way, Turn Left from Left of Island on Green Arrow Only, Yield Right-of-Way to Pedestrians. An upsetting collection of noises --roaring buses, blaring horns, shrill policemen's whistles. "It's enough to make 'he visitor from the rural area give up and head for home," commented the Council. While the age-old picture of the rural resident certainly is outdated, said the Council, city driving an be terrifying and lazardous to people from farms EXAMPLE--Shah Mohammad Eeza PaWavi and Queen Farah wear uniforms of a Boy Scout and Girl Guide respectively at a scout jamboree in Manzarieh, Iran.

An accolade of approval and pleasure welled up as the telecast was completed. "Consider us your supporters.

We will urge our students to 'stop, look and listen' but (we) see from the initial viewing much merit for us as teachers." "It's largely psychological, of course," observed the Council. "City driving, for the inexperienced, is pretty grim business," it said. "Rule No. 1 is don't panic! "Get firm grip on your nerves. Decide that no matter what happens, you're going to stay calm." The second rule, said the Council, is be alert for pedestrians, especially in the middle of the block.

Pedestrians may dash from the curb without warning. Give them the right-of-way. Wait for them even though hornhonkers behind you become impatient. Other National Safety Council tips to help the person not accustomed to city driving: 1. Don't follow the car ahead loo closely.

2. Don't make sudden movements or changes of direction. Stay in one lane. Keep your eyes peeled on what's going on around you. Keep checking the rear view mirror.

It can warn you of a situation developing which may involve you. 4. Keep in mind that busy, multi-lane boulevards probably are safer than narrower streets. 5. Don't rubberneck and drive at the same time.

Park if you want to look at something. 6. Watch out for suddenly open- ing doors while driving alongside parked cars. Even in residential areas, you may find the streets solidly lined with parked cars-so beware of children darting into the street. 7.

Remember to turn left from a one-way street it's necessary to be in the far left lane. And passing on the right is permitted in multi-lane traffic moving in one direction. So out for cars overtaking you on the right. -t L. W.
