office in Atlanta. Though ESKOM has -a surplus of electricity, Dahlberg said the company may in the future sell off some power plants that are now mothballed and that Southern could be interested in. "There may be some opportunities," Dahlberg said. "If you're not there first and with some interest and you don't express that interest, then you dont get those opportunities." Another topic discussed was the possibility of establishing, direct air service between Atlanta and South Africa, Williams said. He cited meetings with South African Airways.

"It's simply part of a continuing discussion, and it will take its course over time," he said. It was the second major trade mission from Atlanta to South I Africa in almost two years. Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell led a larger group in April 1995. "One measures the results of a trip like this over time," Williams said. "It is not an instant pill that one takes.

But I felt very good about the entire mission. When you send a group like this, it sends an important signal." Also included in the delegation were Odie Donald, president of BellSouth Mobility; Scott Seydel, president of the Seydel Patricia Mitchell, presi-; dent of Turner Original Produc-', tions; Jerry Norman, president of Norcon Systems Robert Harris, president of Jackmont Intermedia; and Isaac Farris chief of staff at the King Center. i- Group optimistic about future deals By Matthew Qulnn STAFF WRITER An Atlanta trade delegation has returned from South Africa with members optimistic about future trade and economic ties between that emerging economy and the metro area. "We were very cordially received," said Neil Williams, managing partner of Alston Bird, the Atlanta law firm. "There are a number of existing links between Atlanta business and South Africa.

Cape Town is a very vigorous bidder for the 2004 Olympics. So there are clearly some common experiences." Andrew Young, chairman of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored the trip, led the 15-member group on a six-day visit to Johannesburg and Cape Town. Delegation members returned to Atlanta last week. Young stayed behind in South Africa, in part to work on the Southern Africa Enterprise Development Fund, which will lend $100 million to small businesses in the region. He was appointed to the post by President Clinton.

No particular business deals were announced as a result of the trip. But A.W. "Bill" Dahl-berg, chairman and chief executive of Southern said, "I would be amazed if something did hot come out of it." For his part, Dahlberg met with officials from ESKOM, the tor tne pacKage giant. outwardly is something of a throwback, with fixed landing gear and a fat-bellied profile that brings to mind a miniature version of a 1930s flying boat. (There is, in fact, a floatplane version.) Its oddest feature is the two-engine, one-propeller design a concept that long has been kicked around but rarely applied.

The two engines, supplied by a partnership of Allison Engine Co. and Allied Signal Engines, will be connected by a gearbox to the single driveshaft. The idea is to provide multi-engine power and backup without the added drag of two separately mounted engines. Also, Lewis said, the Loadmaster will be easier to fly than conventional twins should one engine fail. As for the Loadmaster's ungainly appearance, what of it? said Lewis.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," he said. "To the guy who wants to move 7,500 pounds in containers, it's pretty nice looking." Blair has an even more practical answer. "They'll Ay at night a lot," he said, "so we don't have to worry about too many people seeing them." build iU ot the feeder aircraft machine," said Mark Blair, vice president of supplemental air operations at Memphis-based FedEx. Then Ayres Chief Executive Fred Ayres, who wanted to broaden the company's product line, heard about the search and offered up Ayres' services. He put a small design team on the project, and the Loadmaster was born.

A prototype will fly in about 18 months. Blair said any hesitation at FedEx about being the launch customer for an unproven design from a small company was overcome by Ayres' solid reputation and the chance to have a plane tailor-made for its use. Said Lewis: "I think we were kind of small and innocent and listened well to what their needs were. They were used to dealing with some of the major manufacturers." As the Loadmaster moves from drawing board to production, Blair said FedEx will be watching Ayres' work more closely than it would a larger company's. But he added the Loadmaster's simple design should minimize the risk of complications or delays.

"An air frame of this nature is not rocket science," he noted. Indeed, the Loadmaster The Ayres Loadmaster was The Albany manufacturer will uses ranging from fire-bombing to medical evacuation. "Who knows?" Lewis said. "We may have underestimated the market." The Loadmaster will bring up to 300 new jobs to Ayres by the time delivery of the FedEx planes begins in 1999, Lewis said. But he added that the company, which now has 500 workers in Albany, has yet to decide whether to assemble the Loadmaster there or open a second plant elsewhere in the region.

No strangers As odd as their partnership may sound at first blush, Ayres and FedEx were no strangers before the Loadmaster deal. Ayres had worked on cargo doors for FedEx for several years. About five years ago FedEx began looking for a plane to fill the gap between two existing feeder planes, the Cessna Caravan, capable of hauling 3,000 pounds, and the Fokker F27, which carries up to 12,000. It also wanted a plane that could accommodate FedEx cargo containers, which speed aircraft loading and unloading. Project Start Up Funded by the ARC EGA QTICES the Legal Advertising Representative to place your legal By Scott Thurston STAFF WRITER When package delivery giant Federal Express went looking for a new regional cargo aircraft, the search ended in an unlikely location: the farm country of southwest Georgia.

That's where FedEx found tiny Ayres an Albany manufacturer of crop dusting planes and assorted aircraft and helicopter parts. The two companies recently announced a preliminary agreement under which FedEx will buy 50 Loadmasters, an odd-looking new Ayres design that will use two engines and one propeller and haul up to 7,500 pounds of containerized cargo. FedEx hopes the plane will fill a hole in its fleet of "feeder" aircraft, which serve smaller cities and function as the cargo equivalent of commuter airliners. Ayres hopes the deal, terms of which were not disclosed, will lead to bigger things. "This is going to put this little company on the map in the aviation industry," said Pete Lewis, Ayres sales manager.

The FedEx deal includes options to buy 200 more Load-masters, and Ayres believes that over the next 10 to 12 years it can sell 350 or so beyond mat, primarily to users in developing nations where a rugged, versatile midsize plane would be prized. i Ayres will offer five basic cargo and passenger versions, and it also plans to pitch the Loadmaster to governments for mmm Monthly Premluuui Agt. iroo.ooo uscooo tsoo.ooo SS U.S1 19.14 S2.1 40 11.75 10.13 14.37 45 1S.05 23.49 40.89 50 16.51 32.19 S8.29 (S 21.75 45.24 84.39 60 S1.76 70.25 134.42 Male non-smoker Preferred rates by KEMPER LIFE.
