in taaa tW BUSINESS D2 Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Ayres soars into Europe on Czech purchase TODAY'S TOPIC INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MATTHEW C.QUINN je-mail: mquinnajc.com) Albany-based airplane builder thinks acquisition will boost revenue to $100 million. By Scott Thurston STAFF WRITER Ayres the Albany-based maker of utility airplanes and parts, is venturing into Eastern Europe in a deal that will nearly triple its work force and could do the same for revenue. The company said Monday it closed a deal to buy LET, a troubled aircraft manufacturer in the Czech Republic, for an undisclosed amount of cash and assumption of debt LET has about 1,700 workers at a plant in the city of Kunovice, or almost triple the 600 workers at Ayres' factory in Albany. The state-owned Czech company makes the L410 and L420 with the Loadmaster, a light cargo plane the company is developing for Federal Express.

Fred Ayres, president, chief executive and owner of Ayres said he believes the acquisition will help boost Ayres' 1999 revenue to $100 million, from about $35 million now. The deal is an outgrowth of the Loadmaster contract, which Ayres landed in late 1996. Fred Ayres said his company came across LET while looking for a subcontractor to build wing and tail sections for the new FedEx plane, final assembly of which will occur at a plant under construction in Dothan, Ala. Ayres picked LET because of its experience with similar-sized utility aircraft, but the Czech company's future was uncertain because of financial difficulties and a slowdown in orders from countries of the former Soviet Union. LET'S aircraft assembly line is currently idle, with workers doing subcontract work.

"We got concerned about them going out of business, and at the same time we got very interested in their engineering and management and product line," Ayres said. "They really fill a niche in the utility aircraft market that's been pretty well abandoned." He believes Ayres' marketing expertise and reputation for product support can produce steady sales of LETs aircraft, especially in the Third World, where inexpensive planes are needed. "We think out in the boondocks there's a real need for these kinds -of planes," Ayres said. Meanwhile, he added, the factory will be producing key components for the Loadmaster. "Rather than laying off any of the LET workers we're going to find plenty for them to do," Ayres said.

He added the plant will remain under current Czech, supervision, with Ayres sending only a small on-site team. Special LET, The Czech Republic factory Ayres Corp. purchased, will produce key components for the Loadmaster. dramatically expand the Ayres product line, which consists chiefly of the Thrush and Turbo Thrush crop dusting planes, along utility aircraft, along with a new model, the L610, that is awaiting U.S. certification.

The company said it's worried that allowing reporters and the public to watch the government's questioning of Gates and others might compromise sensitive company trade secrets prosecutors might ask about It also warned that opening each court-ordered deposition would create a "media circus" and "carnival atmosphere" that would interfere with the company's pretrial preparations.

Meanwhile, Gates filed to sell 500,000 more shares last week. Gates filed to sell 300,000 shares on Aug. 13 and 200,000 on Aug. 10 for a total value of $52 million. The filings- come with Microsoft shares down 12 percent from their record 117.9334 on July 17.

This month, Gates has filed to sell a total of 5 million shares valued at $531.1 million. The trial is set to begin Sept. 8 although last week, the Justice Department and Microsoft jointly asked the judge for a two-week delay, mostly because of the possible delays in pretrial interviews. Interest rates mixed in Treasury sale ASSOCIATED PRESS Microsoft urged a federal appeals court Monday not to allow the public to watch the government's upcoming pretrial interviews with Bill Gates, saying it would create a "carnival atmosphere." The company is appealing a judge's order last week opening the depositions of Gates and other executives in the government's antitrust case. The judge, who later refused to reconsider his decision, cited an 85-year-old law that requires such interviews be opened in antitrust trials.

It was unclear exactly when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia might make its decision, but a ruling was expected early this week.
