Daniel Payne, the lover of Mary Rogers, was found dead on Friday afternoon, at Hobuken, near the spot where the body of that unfortunate girl wu discovered, under circumstances that warrant the belief that he committed suicide. The Ccroner, Mr. Merrill, summoned a jury of inquest immediately, but subsequently ad journed to thia morning, at 11 o'clock, in order to give opportunity tor 'the friendaof the de ceased to be present. Payne called at ino Phenfi Hotel, Hobonen, on Thursday Hia appearance was singular and attracted mach attention. Ho had no hat on, and asked a gentleman present to loan hira one.

Ho eventoally obtained a hat, and as ho was going away, ho remarked, Perhaps you don't know who I am I am Payne, the lover of Mary Rogers. No one knows my tanubles He then left, and no knowledge was had of hia movements, until he was found dead yester day afternoon Important papers are said to have been foond upon hit body, but of their character we are not informed. Rumor tap four persons are implicated ia the murder of the guL In addition to this, we have received the New York Advertiser, of Saturday afternoon, containing a summary of the testimony taken at the inquest, from which appears doubtful whether Payne committed suicide, or died from intern. peranco, to the temptations of which, it appears, he has yielded since the death of ftfiai Rogers. The following ia from the Advertiser ItBDneara bv the' teatimon of thia witness that the deceased was strongly attached to Mary Heeerev fiinea ner aeaia no aaa seen moony, and, as witness thouaht, not exactly in hia right mind.

He hsa not keen habitually intemperate. Witness had only seen him in liquor once during the last three years. Oa Thursday of the present wteK ne ainea at noma, ne appeared melancholy, and aa though he bad beea drinking a litue. unserving mo acratca upon ma nose, witness aked him how it came. He said be did not know.

Witness bad not seen him after din ner on that day, until ho aaw hia dead body, in regard 10 tne urn ana manner in wnicn the deceased came hv hia death, a Dr. Griswold, of New York, testified that be was wslkine with a mend along tne gravel patn to war a tne grotto at the point, when they aaw a man prostrate upon ooe of the aeatt by the way side? near where the body of Mary Rotrera waa found. His neaa was aowo upon tno gravel, ara ms legs across the bench. He ran and raised him op aw he waa near hia end observed a convulsion of the chast. He died in two or three minutes.

Ha had no baton, but an old chip hat lay near him. Thia hat waa produced While another witness was under examina tion, but testifying to no material point, additional interest waa created by the arrival of two yoong men from the spot where it is supposed Mary Rogers was muruered, bringing with them a hat, a white pocket handkerchief and the fragments of a vial, the bedv of which vet con tained a few drops of laudanum. It waa label led laudanum, from Place It 8 Milliard's. Mr. Payne at once identified the hat aa belonging to hia brother.

He purchased it ia Chatham street and it bad the crape which the deceased bad placed apon' it in mourning for Mary nosers, ui tne naorjitercnieliM witness knewnohing. The pocket book (or large wallet), with some papers, together with a aegar case, and the apectaclerf the deceased, were identified as hie by Mr. Payne, Ths manner of the discovery of the hat was The deceased was a cork cutter by trade. The two young men who came ia with the hat are of the same fade. Seeing the paragraph in the morning papers, they weat over to Hoboken at 9 o'clock, ana supposing that the inquest would be held where tno body wee found, they walked op that place and falling ia with a straggler, proceeded oa, and loquirad tlh nay to the place where it Usappeeed Mary Waa murderrd.

They went to Nick Moore's boose, and Mrs. Loss, the landlady, directed them to the place. They found ft ee baa often beea dercribed secluded orenrrown with thrubhery, like aa arbor. On looking in they aaw the hat, and oa 5 oiilg in discorcred also the handkerchief and le broken pieces of phial. With thea they immediately returned, and inquired for the coroner's inquest.

The hat ia nearly new, aewly Brushed, at ironed, aad quite glossy. From the other ustinanoy wniea we heard, it was proved that toward eventr oa Thur.day, a man. supposed to be the deceeirrl. wis seen by two men, who store pawing by, sitting by the entrance into the bowel of the order, anvateatlr engaged writing. Tbey took biro to a email tavern, nut the landlord, supposing him drunk, would not let bin in. Gave him a gentle above back, and ho fell down.

Witness seated bin upon ths (toop, and left bint to go to hia work. The next notice elicited of him waa the account of hit death, at itated by the first witness. The place whore bo waa found waa about half a mile from the tavern last mentioned. Mm Lose, the landlady of "Nick Moore's House," testified positively that the deceased was not the man whom aho aaw at bar house with Mary Rogers on the 85th of July. That men wai both younger and smaller than the deceased.

i it The strangest feature ia thia tragic story the fact that the hat and handkerchief were perfectly dry when found. It had rained, jm we all kno wyestorday, nearly all day, and mach in the night Several papers were found apon hit person bat none, to far aa we can learn, shall bo likely lo throw any light on the mystery of the murder. They were principally memorandoms be had written down the date of every examination he underwent before the Mayor, and probahly the last he ever wrote wu in pencil on the back of one ofe papera, to the following effect 1 I am on the very ipot Gad forgive me for mv minpent time."
