Campaign For Nurses' Home For Mercy Hospital Opens June 19th Prominent Men and Women vviu Aixui in KAising $200,000 PHILADELPHIA. The sum ox as sought with which to build Ithe new train ing school and home for the hospital. In this a greater number of colored nurses, the crying need oi Philadelphia, with its large colored population, will be trained and housed, providing facilities the lack of which has severely handicapped the hosnitaL. it was pointed out to those who attended the meeting on Monday night that not only is this campaign a humanitarian one, but one of vital interest to the city, owing to the heavy death rate among colored people, and the susceptibility of tie race to contagious diseases and to tubercuiosi i Mayor Mackey is honorary chair man of the campaign committee, while J.

F. R. Griffin. "In Philadelphia the death rate among colored people is more than double that among white people, and out of the two million people here more than. 175,000 are colored," said Mr.

Smith yesterday. "This preients aj serious problem not only for that race but for the whole community. "Colored people also are more susceptible to contagious diseases and tuberculosis, hence their condi tion greatly affects the community. As former Senator Pepper said last Monday I night the building of the Nurses Home and Training School for Mercy Hospital and the improve ment of the facilities of that organization mean much to the munity as a whole. Unfortunately up to this tinvt the facilities for colored girls to obtain training as nurces has been limited here, and those who have trained have done so under great difficulties.

We now propose to provide this. In all respects Mercy Hospital is rated in Class A by medical men of the country, but the! nurses must be trained and housed before thts hos pital can realize to its full its service to Philadelphia." i iiNioxrnvw. pi. Sunday. June 10.
