THE MIKADO'S MOTHER IN LAW. Ho Ulna Was Duo to tho Introduction, of Railraada, The mikado of Japan has a mother in law, and that mother in law was lately attacked by a serious illness. So grave were the symptoms Jour hundred and twenty three specialists were at onee summoned to the sick lady's bedside. This, however, is not quite the right way of putting it. The being' so.

The specialists refusing' to give any precise the patient did what our own patients often do in similar circumstances." She 7 asked the consolations of religion and Buddhist priest was summoned. naIlo. Jj' RICH INDIAN TRIBE. On Condition In Which. It Pays to Have Xasrc 'sanllr Iibeated near Arkansas City, are the Osages, probably the richest tribe of Indians in the world. They number about three hundred men, women and children, eacbot whom receives from the.

government between three hundred and four hundred dollars annuity in Interest oil the purchase price of lands, sold many years ago. In addition to this they derive a good income from the rent of land on the reservation now occupied by them, most of it being1 used by cattlemen for grazing' purposes. They are negotiating' for the sale of the reservation, or that part of it which they do not wish to retain to be divided in severalty. Many of the Osages, says the Washington Star, are highly educated, and some of them enjoy all the luxuries of modern civilization. There are several magnificent residences on the little reservation.

Probably the most imposing of these is that of Frank Denoya, just completed. It is splendidly finished and furnished throughout. It is provided with hot and cold water baths, and all other appointments that are to be found in the better class of city ho me si Servants are employed to do all of the housework, and an accomplished teacher is kept to instruct the female members of the family in music and other accomplishments of polite society. As fast as the children complete the primary course of education they are sent to the best schools in the country to receive instruction in the higher branches. While Mr.

Denoya is still a comparatively young man, he has a family of twelve children, each of whom receives over thirty dollars a month from the general government. In addition to this they receive for twelve hundred acres of grass land. He has inclosed and under cultivation one hundred and sixty acres of fine valley land for each member of his family, which earns a yearly rental of three dollars per acre. His income from all sources amounts to more than twelve thousand dollars per annum. He has not a dollar of tax to pay, and his children are educated without cost to him.

While there is every inducement for the Osages to raise large families, the tribe is steadily decreasing in numbers, and it will be, it is said, but a short time after they take their allotment in severalty and break up tribal relations before the race will be extinct. They do not work, and those who have not improved their opportunity to adopt the mode of living of their well to do white brothers are vagabonds. The trade of the Osages is much sought after by merchants of towns in the surrounding country. Before the opening of the Cherokee strip it all came to Arkansas City, which was the nearest trading point, but now no less than three towns have been started whose only excuse for their existence is their nearness to the Osage reservation. FAVORS WESTERN IDEAS.

The Chinese Viceroy Showlns; That Ho Believes in the Value of Education. Li Hung Chang has given one more instance of his readiness to adopt western ideas where they may some day add to China's power to cope with the foreigner on the field and afloat by the building of a large medical college, which he opened recently at Tientsin, in connection with the naval service. This, says a writer in the New York Herald, is the first institution of the kind worth speaking of, started by the Chinese government, which, despite its craze for western arms, and foreign ships of war, has hitherto made no provision whatever for treating its wounded. The college is upon an extensive scale and will be under the charge of a distinguished graduate of university, who was selected for the post by the late Sir A. Clarke.

The establishment of the college is largely due to the personal efforts of Dr. Irwin, the viceroy's medical attendant, and to a talented Canadian lady. Dr. King who exercised much influence upon the late Lady Li, and she, in turn, had long urged the viceroy to lay the foundation of an institution where the Chinese might be taught the knowledge of the west in the healing art, in which both the viceroy and his late wife strongly believed. Already some twenty well educated, English speaking young Chinamen have entered the college, and teaching has already commenced.

The opening of the new institution was attended by a pleasing ceremonial, in which the foreign and Chinese officials displayed the most friendly relations and gave utterance to the most amicable sentiments toward each other. The aged but still vigorous viceroy evinced the liveliest interest in the entire proceedings. A Fashionable Jim So your wife has left you? Tim She has. All men, too, will hunt the unfortunate locustv not as food, for he is not theredible locust of Seripture, which, garnished with wild honey, formed the staple diet of the ancient wanderer, but out of a desire to destroy him lest he destroy their fruit trees and vines.

He is himself a predatory individual, and does great damage to vegetation, wherefore the farmers hold him in abomination. But one man will there be who will rejoice in the advent of the seventeen year harvest fly, and that is the fisherman. When all other baits fail the larva of the seventeen year locust will tempt the wariest fish to the hook. It is not the full fledged insect, however, that avails here, but the larva at the roots getting ready to emerge from his sixteen years of underground existence and burst into the glory of gauzy wings and a more or less musical whir. These larvae are white and unpleas antly moist; also, they look as if they might bite or sting or otherwise per form in a harmful manner, but they can't.

You may, by digging down at the root of a young tree, turn up a number of them at every spade thrust. Put them into a box, cover them over with dirt; then go to the nearest stream, bait your hook with one of them and throw in your line. If you don't catch something, it is because the fish are all dead or else you weren't born to be an. angler. Trout, black bass, rock bass, perch, pickerel and even bullheads will turn aside in dis dain from fly, minnow, worm or craw fish and eagerly crab the larva of the locust.

There is use for everything, and if our periodical cicade guests give us better fishing, then surely their visits cannot be regarded as an unmiti gated evil. Otner TBJairs Comae.
