FRIDAY, MAY 2, 1947 WUaUojiAC6 FMJITA TIVES William Rosenburg Meets Billy Rose buslnesa. What happens? "Look" magazine does a photo layout on how you spend your Sundays. Reporters ask you how you stand on the question of a free Trieste. The bonniest bustles In 14 states warm the bench outside1 our office. The 'grocer who grosses a million brags to his wife he knows you.

Need any more Name four Representatives In Congress from your own Okay. Stand in the corner, you dunce. Now, name the actor who played Rhett Butler in "Gone With the Wind." The prosecution rests. Which is my windy way of saying it's tough to be in show business and not get a swelled head. It's tough not to believe the bilge your own press agent writes about you.

WelU speaking of the big head, I. don't think the bus ness ever had to put up with a more Inflated noggin than the one I was toting around back in 1940. I had two Aquacades going for me one in New York and one in San Francisco. Mile long lines of intelligent people were queuelng up in front of my water shows to give me their forty centses. My night club in Manhattan was playing to almost as mjch business as the subway.

Phot'o mags were popping flash bulbs in my face, and delirious caption writers were dubbing me "Public Showman No. 1." High over the New York States amphitheatre, a block lone neon sign ballyhooed my name In letters of fire. And money? Why, old time gold prospectors were fighting for the chance to pan out my bath water! My ealloping case of stra finally get my missus down. Your daughter goes to Miss Finch's School for Young Ladies and chases you upstairs when company comes. When you die, you might get as much as two inches In the Wholesale Grocers' Weekly. Gross million dollars in'show Wonder Boy," Eleanor sarcas ticked one day, "why pay Johnny Wiesmuefler all that money? I'm sure the audience would rather see YOU do a little walking en the water." The world was my oyster all right, all right, but I forgot about the months without an In them.

I got my come uppance that August. I got cut down to size, and, as you may have heard, that ain't big. One afternoon an assistant yes man came panting into my office. Boss, boss." he puffed, "A guy at the other end of the midway is swiping your name. Sells canaries.

Calls his place 'Billy Rose's Pet Shop." To me that was like putting the snatch on the Holy Gra 1. "I'll run him out of the Fair!" I exploded. "I'll get Grover to throw nun off the grounds. My lawyers will bury him In injunctions!" Next afternoon a committee ol e'ght lawyers, managers, Fair of I icia Is marched up to the pet shop. At the bottom of a little store window was a mess of baby turtles with Trylons and Perispheres painted on their backs.

Above them, in little wooden cages, was an assortment of tired canaries. "Live read a tiny sign over the door. Above it, in bigger letters, there it was "Billy Rose's Pet Shop." Breathing fire and acid, I stomped in. My board of strategy squeezed In after me. The shop was empty, except for a wispy little geezer feeding a goldfish.

"Where do you get off using my name on this sparrow loft?" I thundered. 'Tve spent a lot of time and money making the nam? Billy Rose stand for something. Rip down those signs or I'll have you and your two bit menagerie put in jail!" The little pet shop owner never stopped feeding his fish. "Don't holler," he said. "It scares the canaries.

Perhaps you'd like to see my birth certificate. It happens my name For a long moment, nothing ould be heard In that shop but he twittering from the cages. One Sf my lawyers hid his smile behind his brief case. "Run along," I told my committee. "I'll settle with this gentleman myself." A few minutes later I was back on the midway, little wooden cage tucket under my arm.

Tha buck and a quarter canary got a lot of attention in my office that summer. My missus knows the story. Whenever I let the swelling In my scrap book go to my head, she chirps, "Tweet tweet, tweet tweet." I pipe down. Income Tax Editor The Tribune Sir: If a person makes a mistake or omits the 16 tax reduction in figuring his income tax he will not lose as the government will return the overpayment.

However there are other overpayments that aren't recognized as such. For instance: The rate on a $1400 income for married without dependents is $65. If the taxable income exceeds this by 25c he has the choice of paying the $1410 rate which is $68 or making a gift to His Majesty of the 25c which reduces his taxable income to $1400. See page 3 of form Tl Special. The taxpayer must send the gift before May 1st 1947.

According to the law of averages two out of every ten taxpayers should profit by a gift. The same applies less frequently to family allowance recovery. An employe with a $1405.21 Income received $278 family allowance. A Gift of $5.21 to the government reduced his income to and saved the 10 family allowance recovery of $27.80. That lsn chiselling so I think every taxpayer should get the henefit of the min mum tax regardless of his IQ.

JOHN W. GILBERT Hanover, Ont. April 17 Jehovah's Witnesses Editor, The Tribune, Sir, On Monday. April 14 you printed part of a speech presented by the Mos Rev. Gerald Murray, Roman Catholic coadjutor bishop of Winnipeg before the Knights of Columbus initiation banquet I am not one of Jehovah's Witnesses but I think an unbiased Christian should not have made this attack against any other Christian denomination.

Jehovah's Witnesses are no more subversive or Ignorant on Bible doctrines than any other Protestant Church body. They are "Stickers" for what they believe, and that Is where the trouble comes in. They have as much right to preach Christ as they believe, as any other church organization, and be unmolested at that. I believe they allow the same liberty to others. The printing of same was not In good taste, but tends to stir tip trouble, setting variances of one Church body against another.

Sir, I've been a subscriber for many years and find your "Opin ion" column very interesting. I would like very much to see the ball kept rolling In the column re old age pensions. It seems almost to be a political Issue, it seems very st large to have this bail bounced back and forth from one govern jment to another. It was amazing iand encouraging to see how fast the issue oLraising the tremendous sums of money required to destroy mankind during tne war was ap. proved by our governments.

Why cannot the same harmony exist and money raised for the preservation of mankind. Fifty dollars pension Is not extravagant, but the $25 is ridiculous. I have an oid perton to care for. Let us set up' the alarm clock In the various governments and wake up our politicians before it Is too 'late. JOE STADTHERR Winnipeg, April 17.

One trick in every suit had to be lost under the very best conditions and before declarer was through trying to salvage his diamonds, he had lost a couple of more tricks, for a SOO point penalty. This was a pretty bad result for North South, especially in view of the fact that three no trump would have been easy from the South position. The actual A letter addressed to Premier tarson and to the president of the Manitoba Civil Service association was received Thursday from J. M. Mitchell, Chicago, executive director of the Civil Service Assembly of Canada and the United States, but failed to throw any light on the Intended meaning of a section of a wage report made last February by the Assembly.

In the controversy about adjustment of a rtroactive pay for the civil service which came to a head In the latter days of the Legislative sesf ion, a difference of opinion arose as to whether the Assembly Ely Culbtruoa.) four spade contract resulted from North's Inability to Interpret his partner's two no trump properly. Let us consider: After opening with one spade and hearing a two dlamond overcall from West and a spade raise from North, South had signified willingnesa to reach game in no trump by bidding two odd at that denomination. This was the clearest sort of announcement to North that South had a double stopper in the adversely bid diamond suit, and since he would not have bid the no trump with strength in only two suits, it was entirely evident that he also had something in the unbid suits, or at least In one of them. The two no trump, then, be. aides being an offer to play at a no trump contract, was an implicit suggestion that If North had auxiliary stoppers in the unbid heart and club suits, he should raise the no trump rather than continue with spades.

Certainly South could not have intended to ask North whether he too had something in diamonds by bidding two no trump against Weut'i diamond bid, South waa giving assurance that nothing need be feared in that direction. Instead of making the highly ambiguous three heart bid, North should have raised to three no trump, or at least should have done so after South bid three spades.
