BRACKEN DENIES HAVING STOCK IN CONTRACT FIRM Says He Is Not Interested In Middle- West Construction Co.

Premier Bracken, before the publio accounts committee today, denied reports he was interested, directly or indirectly, in the Middle West Construction firm which has secured several contracts from the government good roads branch, and had one of the contracts on the eastern section of the Trans-Canada. Rumors he was a shareholder in the firm had just come to his attention, he said, and he asked the privilege of putting his denial on record. "They are absolutely and unqualifiedly untrue," he said. "I know nothing about the company, its past or present, and don't expect to in the future. I do not know where the rumors originated." Refuse to Produce Records similar statement was made by Hon.

W. R. Clubb, minister of public works. The committee, by vote of three to two, refused production of what were termed private J. T.

records of the and company, J. asked BolHaig, K.C., A. vin, secretary-treasurer of the company since its Incorporation. Mr. Haig asked the witness to produce the charter of incorporation, the minute books, the bylaws, the bank books and cash records, copies! of all contracts with the government, the money paid on the contracts and how it had been disbursed.

Speaking for the company, Wm. Manahan, its solicitor, said there was no objection to production of material relevant to an inquiry by the public accounts committee or any other committee. There were some requests, he stated, which were matters 'or private business and would be of no use to the committee. These, he said, should not be requested, Supports Part of Motion Mr. Haig said his request was made because of a statement of A.

McGillivray, deputy minister of public works, given in evidence before the committee, that A. R. Boivin, a member of the legislature, was general manager of the company and the person with whom the government always negotiated with respect to the contracts. On this basis, he said he was entitled to know if any money paid by the government on any of the contracts had been paid to any member of the legislature, On this point the committee divided. Mr.

Halg moved for this production, and F. Y. Newton seconded the motion. In the vote they were opposed by B. Griffiths, N.

A. Hryhorczuk and N. v. Bachynsky. J.

W. Breakey said he would support part of the motion but not all. There was some material asked which, in his opinion, was none of the committee's business. On the division Mr. Breakey did not vote.

The committee afterwards limited the production to the original charter of incorporation and the contracts with the government. Mr. Boivin will bring these to the committee Wednesday. Mr. Manahan told the committee the company lost nearly $60,000 on its Trans-Canada contracts.
