Cox, Foe of New Deal, Dies WASHINGTON U--Rep. E. Eugene Cox, one of the nation's most powerful congressmen and an outspoken foe of much New and Fair Deal legislation, died late yesterday. The 72-year-old Georgia Democrat died of a heart disease at the nearby Bethesda Naval hospital only a day after a special house committee of which he was chairman ended an investigation of alleged subversive infiltration of tax-exempt foundations. Cox had been ill for about a month and missed most of the hearings.

A member of the house since 1925, he was one of its oldest members from point of service. He died only a few weeks after the death of 86-year-old Eep. Adolph J. S.ibath with whom he once traded blows on the house floor. The crusty congressmen later shook hands.

Mrs. Cox was with her husband when he died. A nephew, Charlton E. Galloway, Camilla, said he was with the congressman until about an hour before his death. He said Cox's condition appeared to be satisfactory at the time.

"He insisted that I attend to some business, saying that he was getting along a right," Galloway said. Aides said Cox had been under an oxygen tent at the hospital at one time, but that physicians believed he had been gaining strength recently. Gov. Herman Talmadge of Georgia, who will call a special election (AP WircDhoto) Three happy Crestview, kids, flanked by a couple of deputy sheriffs, view with delight the S117G awarded them by a judge. The boys found the money in a swamp near their home a year ago, turned it over to a sheriff.

When no substantial claim developed in a-year the judge awarded it to the boys. Left to right, behind the money, are Deputy Sheriff J. T. Allen, Pete Eichbourg, 12; Donald Kay Ward, 11; James Warr, 10, and Deputy Sheriff Ralph Hendrix. to choose Cox's successor, said the nation had lost "one of its most able congressmen." "During his long service in con- ress he has fought for constitu- government, Jeffersonian ideals and rights of the respective states to manage their internal affairs," Talmadge said.

"He will be sorely missed." Cox was one congress' most powerful men, because of his rank- ing position on the house rules committee. He was 'one of the Southern leaders on Capitol Hill, and opposed the Roosevelt and Truman administrations on many issues. As second-ranking Democrat on the rules committee he played an important role in defeating many of President Truman's proposals such as civil rights and labor legislation. Dutch Queen Pleads Peace AMSTERDAM, Holland (tP) -Queen Juliana of the Netherlands told the Dutch people in her traditional Christmas broadcast today that world unity must come soon if humanity "to remain in existence." The queen's speech was broadcast over all Dutch radio stations at noon. "During the many centuries since 'peace on earth' was told us," she said, "we went on ta destroy one group of human beings after the other.

At first they were little communities within which it became increasingly difficult to fight each other by force. The same is true for our times when we are standing at the beginning of cooperation between continents or parts of continents. 'Never before was it so unive s. understood that a last battle on the biggest scale, is totally un acceptable. "Gradually the insight is grow ing that humanity should form unity and also that, if we want remain in existence, this unit should be realized in a not to distant future." THURSDAY, DEC.
