Tuesday Evening, April 7, 1944 Pin Liberal Label on By BICHAJRD ZIMMERMAV News-Herald Columbus Bureau COLUMBUS Four weeks from today Ohio voters, in their party primaries, will end the speculation en two contests for nominations for United 'States senator. The contest on the Democratic side has received most attention, but the other battle is a lit- tie more than unusual in its own right. Here have a long-time Republican office holder running without organizational support, trying to prove that the son of Ohio's "Mr. Conservative" is a liberal. SECRETARY OF STATE Ted Brown is taking an approach which one Taft supporter called "a smart political move about the only thing he can do." Pointing out that Brown entered the race 22 underdog and without organization approval House Speaker Roger Cloud added that the Secretary of State is not convincing many old-line Republicans that Robert Taft Jr.

is not Ms father's son philosophically speaking. Brown's approach is simple and forthright: He is trying to give Ohio's ultra-conservatives a rallying point in himself and at the same time not go so far as to offend the more moderate conservatives. His method is likewise simple: Paint Taft as a liberal and himself as "moderate 5 Youngsters Eye Safety Patrol Trip Five West Lake County children are among 119 School Safety Patrol members going to Gettysburg and Washington, D. next month, the Cleveland Automobile Club says. North End Band Parents Elect Tonight Typical of this "moderate is a Brown speech wherein he echoes the line of the far right on the civil rights bill and foreign relations, hut then adds 'the reason some are so afra to speak out against Communists is because of the witch-hunting tactics of Sen. McCarthv BUT TO SET HIMSELF up as the champion of Ohio conservatives is only half the battle.

Brown must also win regular organization support away from Taft. So far. he has not succeeded, even though there is evidence that he has begun to gather some of the Goldwaier- oriented groups to his side. To win regular Republicans, he must make the liberal label stick on Taft. This is difficult.

Taft. like his father, has some liberal leanings and some middle of-the road ideas. In fact, because he does have this inconsistent stand, 'it makes him more like his father. veteran partv regulars THE SENIOR TAFf supported agricultural co-ops at a time when they were considered socialistic and was always an outspoken friend of public housing He took a stand against the Nuremberg trials on that would appeal to the ultra-liberal American Civil Liberties Union. But basically both Tafts were or are conservative, or at least their long range voting indicates such.

Taft hi scored a on the liberal Americans for Democratic Action's score sheet. But this was before his vote on the civil rights bill and it is this vote on which Brown is also points out that the bill bears Taft's name. YET THIS theme will attract essentially the same group that Brown is attracting with his positive approach preaching his own conservatism. The vote on civil rights does not bother many Republican Party regnlars in Ohio, since such well established conservatives as Cong. Clarence J.

Brown also voted for tne measure. So apparently Brown has a limited audience even combined with those election officials all over the state who ow him personal favors, at present is not impressive. He may be offending some of this latter group with his strong far right stand. So far Taft has not answered Brown directly and most of his advisers are relling him not to. Bui his voting record and ADA rating are being circulated by supporters in areas that are notably conservative.

He admitted that "some of them (individuals) have called to say they- have left me now that I am in the Taft but he had received no calls from such ized groups as the rather large chapter of the John Birch Society here. Wjlie also wondered if all of the groups that Brown is aiming at are going to bother to vote in the primary, since neither Sen. Goldwater nor any delegates pledged "to him are on the ballot.

The conservative Columbus representative also said that from his experience the speaker's bill that he believes the far-right is more noisy that numerous, even in conservative Franklin County. Wylie said he had seen no anti-Tali literature, bat a check turned up at least one piece. PUT OUT BY '-Ohio Youth or Constitutional and Conservative Government." a Cleveland based organization it is titled "Liberal Stands of Taft." The one-page sheet lists what are claimed to be Taft's liberal votes, most of them on measures which passed by huge majorities on such subjects as aid to vocational schools, approved 377-21. Not mentioned were votes on wheat sales to Russia and the tax-cut, both important bills on which Taft voted with the conservatives. From early indications the campaign will continue as it started, with little changes except La intensity.

Taft will continue the high-road of the odds-on favorite v.ith Brown trying to awaken the right groups to the primary and personally taking on Taft.
