Locally, Monterey Park If in its modest fourth A'car of presenting Shakespeare on the outdoor of a city recreation in conjunction with the theater arts department of East Los Angeles College. The result is a lively production of "The Merry vives of Windsor," more vorthy than artistically Successful which happens to be OK too. To set the record straight, this student production was well attended received by an audience that might not ordinarily go to the theater. It comprised some relatives and friends of the cast of course, but mostly people out for a breath of cool night air, who are somewhat locked into the community; families, Winning of West Theme of Ballet The winning of the Western plains by pioneers of Scandinavian origin will be the theme of performances by Burch Mann's Ballet America this week-, end at Universal Studios' Inter national Festival.

That the production is basically unoriginal, at odds with particularly creative language and al-m i rmountable acoustics is not unimportant but in this context it is secondary. The costumes and the set (which approximates the Globe) are satisfactory, but the acting is unseasoned to the point of amateurishness.

Randy Clifton delivers a creditable Mr. Ford, while everyone else seems to aim for the caricature rather than the etching except for Slender, who should have aimed for the caricature but balked at playing the role with reckless effeminacy. And how Raul Garza, who plays the Welsh parson, arrives at a Scandinavian accent for the role is a mystery. Robert Eley's direction stops far too short of real fun and games in a play that provides ample opportunity for both. Broader, more inventive business would have helped rather than hindered characterization and given the intricate demands of language a smoother time of it by rallying more action in support of the word.

It is, however, a valuable experience both for students who may better realize how much they still have to learn and the community they serve. Performances continue through Sunday evening at Barnes Park, 400 S. McPherrin Monterey Park. Will Shakespeare would probably be pleased. SYLVIE DRAKE DAILY) MONTH RUM color 1044 S.
