(JP) Th British government intimated today that it might withdraw from the International Sugar Council if the council, which meets in London this week, docs not relax quotas in order to throw more stocks on the market. Responding to a question in the House of Commons, Ronald Cross, parliamentary secretary to the Board of Trade, said that recently "there has been quite an abnormal demand for sugar" and that the British government had told the sugar council the present quotas were insufficient. Cross said Cuba was likely to have a surplus of about 200,000 tons.

"His Majesty's government," said Cross, "have the ight of withdrawing from the council if, after an abnormal rise in world prices, the executive committee have been asked to deal with the situation and have failed to do so." The council was called to meet this week in view of the scarcity of raw sugar supplies and an increasing demand. A specific day was not set.
