Fagan, which opened last night at Lae Palmas Theater. There are challenge, intrigue and stirring melodramatic situations because the drama elects to disclose what goes on behind the iron curtain of Russian-dominated countries. There is a stark realism that carries a terrific impact.

PARADINESE Stanley Prager is the master of ceremonies, having only recently returned from an engagement in New York. His humor is of the brisk repartee variety without being the least bit off color. Everyone enjoyed him immensely. One of the most interesting bits of balladry ever heard by this listener was that presented by Josef Marais and Miranda. The songs embraced many countries, with eniphasis on the South African veld and the Netherlands.

Their interpretations were suave and the pleasant counterpoint of the two voices added much charm. Dancers w-ho can create a new-medium of style and spirit are few and far between but Janet Collins seems to be unique in her choregraphic fantasies which are original and free from extraneous gyrations. Howard Johnson Television Causing New Stir in Pictures BY EDWIN SCHALLERT Glimmerings there are of the films taking up with television during the new year, rather than considering the medium as a rival. Already Paramount has done considerable pioneering in the field with its station KTLA. Still better co-ordination with studio activities will probably be practiced in the future.

One novel project that is in progress right now, apart from that organization, is the plan to utilize television for exploitation of pictures. On foot is a scheme to use Star Dan Duryea in an experiment, lie would make a two-week tour of key cities to enact for televising what might be termed trailer scenes for the film, "Black Bart," in which he appears. Undertaking is still in the negotiation stage. ROOXEY RETURNS TO PICTURES FROM STAGE Another actor of promise brought back into the movie fold after exploits elsewhere. This is John Rodney, whom Milton Sperling has under contract and who has been procured by Warners for a strong role in "Key Largo" as one of the Edward G.

Robinson henchmen. Rodney was the heaviest heavy in Sperling's "Pursued." He then went to Ojai Valley for a stage chore and later into summer stock in the East. Partly this was because no breaks seemed to eventuate in the films. It. is believed that he will now fulfill his movie career in a dynamic way.

His name was formerly John Flynn. TODD, PLAN TRAVELING CINEMA It's interesting to hear from the East that Mike Todd and Joan Rlondell are contemplating a cinema project under the title, "Busman's Holiday," which will cover that part of the country scenical-y. They will shoot the subject in actual locales from New York to Florida. Unusually tangible seems to be the plan for a winter stock company in Palm Springs which is being promoted by Michael Browne, connected with the Actors Lab, and Lee Bering, who has interests in the famous desert resort area. They have already begun preliminaries for a new theater to be completed by next October.

Idea will be to lure Hollywood actors into appearing, as they have done extensively at the seaside summer showhouses. JACQUELINE DALYA NAMED FOR VILLAINESS Talk is that Jacqueline Dalya, who can really enact vamps, will underplayed with subtlety and finesse and his characterization tion by the author was to the point, though perhaps the first act was started in too high a key to build to the more dramatic sequences. The anomalies of the past are here translated into sinister values. There is, somehow pathos in the play for one senses that the Russians are a people recharged with a dynamic power with only a tired and parceled earth to work upon. "An excess of vitality boils over in them and the Bulgarians weakened by war are more or less their puppets and victims.

Barkeeper Graduate The story treats of one Stefan Bulov, a Bulgarian, who is graduated from the life of a barkeeper to a more or less trusted position under the Russian regime. He has managed to secure some very important papers and maps which the United Nations are anxious to acquire. The man from whom he has stolen the papers is killed and Stefan is suspected, though he had nothing to do with the IlilBBtl was charged with that dynamic ory GRANT norem YOUNG im NIVEN quality which makes for a vital portrayal. Hundreds of stars and Hollywood executives have been invited to the event.

A red plush carpet will extend across the boulevard between the two houses with a formal canopy overhead. The cast of "The Paradine Case" will be present at the premieres, including Gregory Peck, Ethel Barrymore, Charles Laughton, Charles Coburn and the two new European stars, Valli and Louis Jourdan. Alfred Hitchcock, who directed the suspense-drama, will also attend. The picture will open to the public next Tuesday at the Bruin and the Vogue theaters. fine as the Russian officer.

These are very popular shorts on the screen, produced at Warners. William Lundigan may be chosen as one of the male stars with Joan Crawford in "Until Proven Guilty."
